Mazda 3 Crankshaft Position Sensor

The Mazda 3 Crankshaft Position Sensor is designed to be the timekeeper of the engine and approximates crank rotation to ensure that the electronic control unit discharges the spark and injects fuel at the optimal moment. Fitted close to the flywheel or main pulley, it looks through a toothed wheel as it passes and will send each pulse as data to the powertrain computer, which in turn also controls ignition advance, fuel volume, idle speed, and even start-up synchronization. In modern Mazda engines the unit is sealed against heat and oil splash to minimize corrosion and vibration damage, which can result in stalling or no-start complaints when the engine is hot. The earlier Mazda 3 vehicles depended primarily on inductive units, which produce an alternating current as teeth pass over a magnetic core, and newer models introduced Hall effect and magnetoresistive devices, which detect static magnetic fields to give a razor-sharp edge but require a clean environment, as well as optical types, which illuminate a slotted disc with light to sense edges. The major distinction is the generation of the signal, where inductive sensors are passive and straightforward, Hall and magnetoresistive sensors are digital with clarity of their signal, and optical sensors have the great resolution but the great dirt sensitivity. The computer is usually informed of the next piston to fire by the separate slots or teeth on a wheel that are teeth apart. In case of failure of the Crankshaft Position Sensor due to heat, vibration, or water, drivers can experience rough idle, misfires, slow acceleration, or engine malfunction. Protective potting and strengthened connectors are added to modern Mazda 3 designs to increase the life of the Crankshaft Position Sensor.

Mazda 3 Crankshaft Position Sensor Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install the Crankshaft Position Sensor on Mazda 3?
    A:
The first step is to remove the battery cover and disconnect the cable of negative battery terminal in order to remove the CKP sensor. The next step is to unscrew the right front wheel lug nuts, lift the front of the car and place it firmly on jack stands and then remove the right front wheel and the smaller access panel. Install the No.1 cylinder at Top Dead Center (TDC) and remove the electrical connector off the CKP sensor. Unscrew the mounting bolts of CKP sensor and remove the sensor. To install, in case of a new CKP sensor, it is supplied with a special alignment jig, which can be an aftermarket tool as well. There is a threaded hole in the crankshaft pulley that a 6mm x 18mm bolt is installed in and screwed into the timing chain cover. Fit the CKP sensor without screwing the mounting bolts. When a new sensor is used, one has to align the sensor with the special jig as indicated by the manufacturer and tighten the bolts firmly and then take off the jig. In case the old sensor has to be reinstalled, find the blank location on the timing plate, count five teeth anti-clockwise and make a straight line through the center of the fifth tooth along to the center of the crankshaft pulley. Make the CKP sensor in line with this line, and screw the bolts firmly. Lastly, disconnect crankshaft pulley bolt and special timing tool, replace the cylinder block plug, installation of which is reverse to that of removal.
