How to remove and install the throttle body on Mazda 3?

Loose the connection of the cable on the negative battery terminal. The lift the upper engine cover on each side and remove it off the mounting posts in the center. Unscrew the air inlet duct, and, as necessary, unscrew the air filter housing cover to have more space. Unhook the electrical connector off the throttle body and clamp off the coolant hoses prior to unhooking them off the throttle body. There might be the need to remove part of the coolant in the system to avoid spills. Disassemble the throttle body mounting fasteners and then remove throttle body out of the intake manifold, remove the old gasket and then cover the throttle body opening with a clean shop towel. Installation is the opposite of removal and a new gasket should be installed; the throttle body fasteners must be clamped to achieve the required tightness.

Mazda 3 Throttle Body

The Mazda 3 Throttle Body is placed between the intake manifold and the air filter box. Its primary task is to regulate the air coming into the engine to ensure that the delivery of fuel is at an optimal level. It has a pivotable plate in the form of a butterfly that opens further as the accelerator pedal is pressed, which allows the powertrain control module to read sensor signals and lengthen injector pulse width to enable more vigorous combustion. In early 2000s Mazda cars, the plate was pulled by a simple mechanical system run by a steel cable, which drivers could experience in real time via the pedal. Newer Mazda 3 models are based on electronic throttle control, where the twin pedal sensors and an electric motor cause the plate to move rather than a cable, which eliminates linkage wear and also cooperates with stability systems to provide a smoother power flow. No matter which method of control is applied, the Throttle Body also has a throttle position sensor and an idle bypass port connected to an idle air control valve, which allow the PCM additional fine control over idle speed and instant tip-in response. Mazda once combined the butterfly with a Throttle Body injection unit in which injectors sprayed fuel at a position slightly above the plate, and present-day engines employ the multi-port type of injection, so the body directs solely air and thus it is easier to maintain. With deposits removed from the plate and sensors, the car is able to maintain sharp throttle response and a stable idle over many miles.
