Mazda 6 Coolant Temperature Sensor

The Mazda 6 Coolant Temperature Sensor is an electronic thermistor. The device consists of an electronic thermistor that is installed in a threaded coolant passage that comes into direct contact with the engine coolant. In turn, this allows the device to relay real-time engine operating temperature information to the Mazda engine control module. The sensor acts as a negative temperature coefficient device wherein the electrical resistance decreases with the rise of the coolant temperature. The module in the Mazda engine control serves a signal of five volts. The changing resistance of the sensor trims the return voltage. The module uses the returned value to compute the temperature of the coolant. The Coolant Temperature Sensor is applied by Mazda systems in the 6. The control module expands the injector pulse duration to enrich the mixture during cold starts based on these readings. The duration is then shortened as the engine warms. It also increases idle speed when the engine is cold to prevent stalling. It also turns the radiator fan on and off as necessary. The information regarding temperature from the Coolant Temperature Sensor data controls the operation of certain systems that may only work after warm-up, including the exhaust gas recirculation, the evaporative emission purge valve, and the torque converter clutch to avoid rough running or stalling during cold-weather operation. As some cooling components require a high current to work, these components are connected through relays instead of being connected directly to the battery. The sensor data initiates these relay actions to avoid overloading the electrical circuits. The threaded mount keeps the component steady, while immersion in coolant enables accurate readings that help the Mazda 6 engine not to overheat.

Mazda 6 Coolant Temperature Sensor Parts and Q&A

  • Q:
How to replace Coolant Temperature Sensor on Mazda 6?
    A:
ECT sensor is nonexistent in 3.7L V6 engines. Start by removing the cable in the negative battery terminal. Then empty the engine coolant. In four-cylinder models, it is worth noting that It has two distinct parts manufacturers one in Mexico and the other in Hiroshima these parts are not interchangeable and cannot be used properly in the incorrect application. You should verify the vehicle identification numbers to understand what manufacturer of parts you are having in your vehicle. Unscrew the battery and battery tray, and pull off the rubber weather cover of the ECT sensor electrical connector (where fitted) and disconnect the connector. An ECT sensor can be removed by unscrewing it off the cylinder head, and then it can be installed again. In the case of 3.0L V6, disconnect the electrical connector to the ECT sensor. In order to take out the ECT sensor, Unlock the locking tab, turn the sensor counterclockwise then take it out of the coolant passage. Disassemble the sensor O-ring and examine it, it should not be cut, ripped or damaged or otherwise worn out. Installation of the ECT sensor is achieved by putting the sensor into the coolant passage and then turning it clockwise until the locking tab clips into place and to remove the sensor is done in the opposite order. Lastly, fill in the cooling system.
