Mazda 6 Power Steering Pump

The Mazda 6 Power Steering Pump allows owners to easily rotate the wheel using much less muscle effort by converting engine energy into fluid pressure which supports every steering. The pump is mounted on the engine and is driven by a serpentine belt, and it draws fluid from a reservoir, forces it through a high-pressure hose and supplies a control valve in the rack-and-pinion gear that applies pressure to one side of the hydraulic piston or the other as the pump turns. There is a specific location in the Mazda engine bay where each Power Steering Pump will reside. Having the same amount of pressure on both sides keeps the car straight, whereas directed pressure makes the work required during maneuvers in the parking zone much less. The car has applied two major styles of pumps over the years. Early designs applied a completely hydraulic unit, with the fluid reservoir either carved out of the housing or attached off-center somewhere else with a hose. Subsequent models included an electronically controlled flow control valve that is fed with data supplied by speed and steering-angle sensors, trimming assist at highway speeds to provide a quicker road feel but enhancing it at low speeds to allow easy cornering. Whining, squealing, leaks, or heavy steering are common indicators of an exhausted Power Steering Pump, so when the belt tension, fluid level and outlet pressure are compared to factory figures, it becomes easier to determine whether the pump needs replacement. All the Mazda pumps, traditional or electronically adjusted, obey the same mission to Mazda drivers; to provide reliable assist without losing feedback, and the feature is one of the main comfort features of the Mazda 6 lineup.

Mazda 6 Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove the power steering pump on Mazda 6?
    A:
The first thing to do is to pull the cable out of the negative battery terminal before removing the power steering pump. With wide syringe or suction gun, siphon the power steering fluid reservoir as much as possible and put a drain pan underneath the vehicle to receive any fluid spillages when the hoses are removed. In models that have a remote fluid reservoir, eliminate the power steering fluid reservoir. On four-cylinder models, disconnect electrical connector at power steering pump, unscrew and remove bolt holding high-pressure fluid line support bracket, disconnect the supply and pressure bolts and remove the power steering pump off the engine. In V6 3.0L models, the right front wheel lug nuts should be loosened, the front of the car raised, and the wheel should be taken off with the help of jackstands. Shake off the lower splash shields, engine oil dipstick, dipstick tube mounting fastener and the tube. Take off the A/C compressor mounting bolts and secure the compressor onto the side with wire or rope after which the front side exhaust manifold is removed. Disconnection of electrical connector at the power steering pump, removal of the supply and pressure hose, dismounting bolts, and the pulling out of power steering pump out of the bracket. Lastly, take out the mounting bolts of the bracket-engine, remove the bracket and the power steering pump. In 3.7L models, dismount the power steering reservoir mounting bolt and place the reservoir aside, then dismount the windshield wiper arms, cowl assembly and wiper motor. The same procedure is done on the right front wheel lug nuts, which are then loosened, the vehicle raised to the front on jackstands, and then the wheel is removed, then the splash shields are removed off the lower part of the vehicle. Disconnection of electrical connector at the power steering pump, removal of the supply and pressure hose, dismounting bolts, and the pulling out of power steering pump out of the bracket. To install, undo the steps of removal and be sure that the banjo bolt and sealing washers are re-attached to the high-pressure supply line, the mounting bolts and the banjo bolt are tightened to the required torque, the power steering reservoir filled with the specified fluid and the power steering system bled.
