Mazda 6 Rack And Pinion

The Mazda 6 Rack And Pinion is a critical device that connects the steering wheel to the front tires, allowing the driver's input to turn the wheels sideways. The steering rack is located in a metal tube that is bolted to the chassis of the vehicle. It has rack gear of linear type and has connections at either end to tie-rods. These tie-rods are further connected to the steering knuckles. As the rack moves from side to side, the tires move left or right. The steering column shaft possesses a circular pinion gear. This gear meshes with the rack. Thus, when the wheel is turned, the pinion rotates. This causes the rack to slide and the wheel direction changes with little backlash. Mazda likes the input and control deriving from the use of the basic mechanical interaction of a circular gear and a linear gear. A straight gear set exhibits lower driving motion, lower temperature, more torque and speed per gear ratio compared to the helical one. The helical gear set would generate a higher torque and a higher temperature, which would create wear and tear. The system may be powered hydraulically or electrically. Effort at the steering wheel is reduced while feedback is retained. The steering actuation in vehicles such as the Mazda 6 is made compact, thus aiding the handling of the vehicle thanks to the Rack And Pinion. The Rack And Pinion configuration is still a choice of many brands for various vehicles including the Mazda 6 because drivers can clearly feel the conversion from rotational motion to linear motion.

    A:
In removing the Rack And Pinion, disconnect the cable attached to the negative post of the battery and then unscrew the Rack And Pinion. Accessing the interior of the car: The intermediate shaft pinch bolt can be taken out and thrown away under the instrument panel. Unscrew the lug nuts of the front wheel, elevate the vehicle and ensure that it is firmly mounted on jack stands and then take both front wheels off. Loose the tie-rod ends of the Steering Knuckles and the front part of the exhaust system. Put a drain pan underneath the Rack And Pinion and bypass the power steering pressure and the power steering return line unscrewing the ends to avoid high fluid leakage and contamination. There models can contain a sheet metal shield that requires that shield to be removed in order to access the fittings. Position a floor jack at the back of the subframe, loosen the crossmember support bracket mounting nut and bolts on either side of the subframe, and then the bracket. Loose the front subframe mounting fasteners and take out the rear subframe fasteners and bring down the rear of the subframe with the jack. In case this is not found to allow enough room to lift out the Rack And Pinion the engine will have to be supported and the crossmember taken away. The second step is to take off the three mounting bolts of the Rack And Pinion followed by the Rack And Pinion. To install, do the steps in the reverse order with the matchmarks taken into consideration when aligning the Rack And Pinion input shaft to the intermediate shaft U-joint and a fresh pinch bolt fitted. Install new subframe mounting bolts, a new banjo bolt and sealing washers on the power steering pressure line tightening all the fasteners. Install the lug nuts and add the power steering fluid of the correct type, and bleed the power steering system. Lastly, get the front end alignment inspection and adjustment made where required.
