Mazda 6 Steering Column

It is through the Mazda 6 Steering Column that the driver can convert every rotation of the wheel into exact road direction, and therefore smooth control is the highly impressive advantage of the system. This important shaft, which is between the steering wheel and the rack, transmits steering angles and torque immediately, thus the car is, within seconds, responsive to your hands. Mazda, over the years, fitted two styles. The early models had a solid, albeit tilting, column that was supported by a simple mechanical lock to inhibit theft, whereas the latter generations were supported by a fully collapsible column with a tilting and telescopic design that matched the universal joints with a tolerance ring. The more recent design is capable of compressing during impact, absorbing crash energy and sparing the driver, and its electronic or mechanical lock that combines with the ignition switch also fulfills tough federal and European anti-theft regulations. The two versions retain their mounting points for multifunction switches, wiring loom, and gauges, and allow the cockpit to remain tidy. Red flags of a damaged unit are also not age-specific, and it is possible to notice such symptoms as grinding during the turning process, the inability of the wheel to self-align, or the inability to engage the lock. These symptoms may cause loss of steering if ignored. The owners of any Mazda are supposed to react fast, as a healthy Steering Column is a sure way of being predictable in their handling and since the experience of having a damaged Steering Column makes possible sudden loss of control of their Mazda 6.

Mazda 6 Steering Column Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install the steering column on Mazda 6?
    A:
In order to dismantle the steering column, one must park the car correctly with the wheels straight facing and disconnect the cable of the negative terminal of the battery. Then take off the Steering Wheel and steering column covers and then tape the airbag clockspring so that it does not turn. Then take off the clockspring and the electrical connector of the multi-function switch. Unscrew the attachments holding the cover to the firewall, label the connection of the U-joint with the intermediate shaft and remove and dispose of the pinch bolt. Go ahead and detach the steering column mounting fasteners, lower the column and then pull it to the rear side and make sure that nothing is still attached to the column. To install, insert the steering column in place by inserting the U-joint into the bottom of the steering shaft and then attaching the mounting fasteners of the steering column in place and tighten them. An assistant will be quite helpful in this process. Install U-joint to the intermediate shaft and apply a new intermediate shaft pinch bolt and tighten it. The other installation process is in the opposite sequence of the removal.
