How to disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery and remove the steering column covers on Mazda 6?

Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Remove the mounting fasteners from the lower steering column cover, then press in on the sides of the upper cover and separate the two covers. Pull the lower cover down, disconnect the key illumination bulb holder from the cover, then remove the cover from the steering column and knee bolster. On 2009 and later models, the key illumination has a separate trim panel that is removed after the lower cover is taken off. Lift the upper cover up, then forward to disconnect the plastic pins that hold the rubber strip to the instrument cluster trim panel, and remove the cover. Installation is the reverse of removal.
