Mazda 6 Neutral Safety Switch

The Mazda 6 Neutral Safety Switch is a sensor that prevents the vehicle from starting unless the shift lever is in park or neutral. The unit is fixed to the transmission, monitors the position of the manual lever, and sends a signal to the powertrain or transmission control module of the engine so that the starter circuit is activated only in the safe positions. The switch employs internal discrete contacts that operate selectively. This happens as the selector shaft rotates. At a particular rotation angle, the park or neutral detents close the contacts. This achieves continuity and signals the control computer to close the circuit, which allows current to the starter relay. When the selector is set to reverse, drive, or any forward gear, the contacts open to withhold the signal and crank. Fluid pressure control for the selected range takes place with the same position signal to the solenoid. A defect in the circuit for the Neutral Safety Switch of the Mazda 6 can thus cause no-start symptoms, erratic gear indication, or a surprise shift. It combines sensing to control safety functions in one form, helping to reduce wiring. The switch works by means of low voltage levels fed by the module. Moreover, the rapid change in electrical resistance serves as the basic mechanical trigger. During standard usage, it stays inactive, only responding when the driver alters the selector position. The replacement requires the alignment marks on the housing to be matched to the transmission selector shaft so the Mazda electronics will recognize what correct detents are on the Mazda 6 and will restore proper Neutral Safety Switch performance.

Mazda 6 Neutral Safety Switch Parts and Q&A

  • Q:
How to replace the Neutral Safety Switch on Mazda 6?
    A:
Begin the procedure on the JA5A-EL (5-speed) transaxle by placing the shift lever in Neutral. Next, raise the vehicle securely on jackstands and remove the underbody cover. The electrical connector for the Neutral Safety Switch on the lower left front side of the transaxel should be disconnected after which the shift cable should be pried off the ball stud on the manual control lever. Take off the manual control lever nut and lock washer, immobilise the manual control lever to prevent damage while loosening the nut, and then take off the Neutral Safety Switch mounting bolts. The Neutral Safety Switch and mounting bolts must be loosely installed before the special alignment tool is used to align the switch, which forms part of the procedure. Reinstall the manual lever, lock washer, and nut securely, ensuring manual lever is in DRIVE before connecting the shift cable and electrical connector. Make sure the engine starts in Park or Neutral after lowering the vehicle. The TCM (transmission control module) of the AW6A-EL and AY6A-EL (6-speed) of the Jaguar is not separately serviceable. If the Neutral Safety Switch needs to be replaced the TCM must be replaced also. The new TCM must be programmed with a factory scan tool. Start by placing the shift lever in Neutral, removing the air filter housing, and unplugging the electrical connector from the TCM on top of the transaxle. Gently detach the shift cable from the manual control lever, take off the manual control lever nut and then the TCM mounting bolts. For installation, the electrical connector for the TCM should be reconnected and the shift cable reconnected so the engine starts only in Park or Neutral.Aligning of the Neutral Safety Switch for FN4A-EL (4-speed) and FS5A-EL (5-speed) transaxles requires an ohmmeter. Start by safely elevating the car on jackstands and taking off the underbody cover. Unplug the Neutral Safety Switch electrical connector, then remove the retaining clip for the selector cable before pulling the shift cable off the manual control lever. Detach the manual control lever nut and lock washer to immobilize the lever so it cannot move and cause damage, then remove the Neutral Safety Switch mounting bolts. At the time of installation, the shift lever must be in Neutral and the manual shift lever in place. Connect one lead of the ohmmeter to one Neutral Safety Switch terminal and the other lead to the other terminal. Adjust the protrusion till the resistance is 750 ohms and finally slide the switch onto the manual shaft. Loosely fit the mounting bolts of the switch, check the resistance again and tighten the bolts if it is correct. Reinstall the manual lever, lock washer, and nut securely, check that the manual lever is in the DRIVE position. Reconnect the shift cable and electrical connector. Verify the engine starts only in Park or Neutral after lowering the vehicle.
