In the case of the manual transaxle, the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) is located in the upper right corner of the transaxle and above the inner CV joint of the right drive axle. In order to remove it, jack up the vehicle and place it on jack stands and then dislodge the engine cover. Unscrew the VSS and electrical connector to VSS, dismount the mounting bolt, and pull out the VSS. Installation involves the use of a new O-ring that is discarded when old and installation is the reverse of removal. When it comes to the automatic transaxle, all other models (except the AW6A-EL and AY6A-EL or 6-speed) the speed sensors are part of the transaxle assembly and cannot be accessed by the home user. It has three speed sensors which include the Intermediate Shaft Speed (ISS) sensor, the Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) sensor and the Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor. The sensors of the ISS and TSS are positioned on the top of the transaxle, and ISS as the rear, and TSS as the forward one. The OSS sensor appears close to the lower-left rear side of the transaxle. In case of replacement of the OSS sensor, raise the vehicle then place it on jackstands and remove the engine under cover. Unscrew the electrical connector of the sensor, unscrew the mounting bolt and detach the sensor. Replace the old O-ring with a new one at installation, the latter has the reverse sequence as removal.
