Proper operation of the engine requires that the camshaft drive gears be installed and set properly because the opening of the engine valves is controlled by the crankshaft and the camshaft movements. The intake stroke requires the
Intake Valve to open to receive the air/fuel mixture into the cylinder and the two valves to be closed during the compression and power strokes and the exhaust valve be opened during the exhaust stroke. This will lead to substandard performance of the engine since there will be no coordination of the valve movements with the pistons. To remove and install parts in a diesel engine, turn the engine to place the number one piston in TDC of its firing stroke, disconnect the battery ground and empty the cooling system, ensuring pets do not access the coolant. Subsequently, dry off the fan, fan shroud, drive belts, power steering pump,
Water Pump, and crankshaft pulley bolt followed by unbolting and removing timing gear cover and eliminating the gasket. Oil pan has to be cleared and all the timing marks have to be adjusted. Take off the camshaft gear, injection pump gear and idler gears and matchmark them to be put back. Hold up the injection pump and take off the gear case disposing old gaskets and cleaning up the mating surfaces. Look at all gears to ensure they are not worn and change those that are broken. To install, change the surface cover seal, fit the gear case with another gasket and torque the bolts. Be sure to install the gears in the correct sequence and to check the correct torque requirements of each part. Lastly, reattach the timing gear cover, oil pan, crankshaft pulley, water pump, power steering pump, accessory drive belts and fan then refill the cooling system and reconnect the battery ground.
