In order to remove and install the rear leaf springs you should first elevate the rear of the truck using jackstands under the frame as it is quite dangerous as the springs are under significant tension and may cause severe injuries. The second step involves putting a floor jack beneath the rear axle in order to hold its weight and disconnecting the lower end of the
Shock Absorbers. Take off the spring U-bolts and plate, spring front bolt, rear shackle nuts and shackle. Take the spring out of the truck. To install, do the opposite of the steps in removal, i.e. hand tighten all the fasteners until the truck returns to the ground, and torque the nuts and bolts when the truck is mounted on its wheels. These Torque values are as follows: Spring rear shackle nuts at rotary pick-up 76 ft. lbs, all others at 58 ft. lbs; 2-wheel drive U-bolt nuts at 58 ft. lbs, 4-wheel drive U-bolt nuts at 101 ft. lbs, front spring pin nut at 76 ft. lbs in models to 1984 and 72 ft. lbs in 1986-89 models, and shock absorber at 58 ft.
