Mazda Fan Clutch

The Mazda Fan Clutch controls airflow through the radiator at the right time when a build up of heat occurs to keep the engine cool while conserving power. Mazda built a global reputation for its ability to blend enthusiastic handling and reliable engineering from early rotary icons to modern SKYACTIV engines, which use little fuel yet rev gladly. The automobile manufacturer blends its KODO design with i-ACTIVSENSE safety so drivers enjoy stylish looks and smart protection while available i-ACTIV all-wheel drive grips confidently on winding or rough roads. Mazda is also looking into electric assistance to reduce emissions, proving efficiency can live alongside driving. Mazda designs every new car with great attention to detail and with a promise of performance, economy and style for the customer to enjoy during every daily commute. Within the hood, the Fan Clutch helps fulfill that promise by spinning freely at lower temperatures, reducing drag to help the engine reach its optimal temperature quickly. As temperature rises, the unit locks and pushes the cooling fan harder to bring a rush of air through the radiator to drop coolant temperature and avoid overheating. This quick response maintains thermal equilibrium in various climates, ensures stable horsepower delivery, and conserves mechanical energy versus a constantly running fan. Due to the mounting of the Mazda Fan Clutch directly on the water pump pulley and the working off the crankshaft belt, it provides a straightforward mechanical solution tailored to the longitudinal layouts typical of the brand portfolio. The end result for drivers is smooth performance and dependable cooling for long engine life.

Mazda Fan Clutch Parts and Q&A

  • Q:
How to check and replace the Cooling Fan Assembly and Fan Clutch on Mazda MPV?
    A:
Checking the fan To test the fan, first unscrew the negative battery cable and shake the fans back and forth manually to test the bearing play. Turn the blades by hand when cold, it must turn freely. Checks: Check the clutch assembly, check the bi-metal spring to determine whether it is deformed or not, and check whether there is a lot of fluid leakage, and also examine whether there is leakage of grease on the exit, and replace the fan clutch accordingly. The ignition should be switched off, and the negative battery cable should be disconnected once more, when the engine is warmed up. Rotate fan manually; it must have some resistance and in case it is easy to rotate the fan then the fan clutch has to be replaced. To remove, disassemble the negative battery cable, unbolt and remove the fresh air duct on the radiator top and remove the nuts which hold the fan assembly to the water pump flange. Take out the top mounting bolts of the fan shroud and squeeze the plastic bottom fasteners on the lower parts of the fan shroud with the long needle-nose pliers. A cooling fan assembly may then be installed using a movement of both the shroud and fan upwards. Removal is done in the opposite sequence of installation.
  • Q:
How to remove and reassemble the Fan Clutch attached to the water pump pulley on Mazda RX-7?
    A:
The fan assembly is fitted to the water pump pulley on the front side of the engine. Starting with the four bolts that hold the fan assembly to the flange on the water pump pulley; remove the assembly out of the radiator cowling and the engine compartment. In case this is too troublesome, remove the cowling on the sides of the radiator and raise it a bit so that it clears. The next step is to loosen up the four bolts connecting the fan with the fan clutch and take apart the two parts. To reassemble, attach the fan clutch to the fan and attach the assembly to the flange on the water pump pulley.
