The front of the engine has a serpentine drivebelt which is very important in the functioning of the engine and its components which drives the alternator, power steering pump (except 3.7L V6), water pump (in four-cylinder models), and air conditioning compressor. It will need periodic inspection because of wear, but this does not mean that it will need replacement beyond 100,000 miles. To test the drivebelt, increase the front of the car, take off the right front wheel and splash shield so it is easier to see the belt, and examine it to check for cracks, fraying, and glazing as well as examining the pulleys. In case of replacement, unscrew the negative battery cable, loosen the lug nuts in the right front wheel and use jackstands to hold the vehicle. Take out the right front wheel and splash shield, record the routing of the belts and release the tensioner to loosen the old belt. Install the new belt on the correct pulleys making sure that it fits properly, reattach the splash shield and wheel and lower the vehicle attaching lug nuts. In the 3.0L V6, the water pump drivebelt is driven by a pulley on the exhaust camshaft, whereas the 3.7L V6 engine has a special design of power steering pump to stretch onto the drivebelt. When changing the drivebelt of the water pump, unscrew the cover, and then pull the old belt off with the help of a flexible strap and then pull the new belt correctly around the pulleys. With the power steering pump belt, follow it around the crankshaft pulley until it reaches the back of the pump making sure it is correctly fitted. In order to change the accessory drivebelt tensioner, loot the bolts holding the old one and screw the new one in and then screw the bolts to the required torque.
