In order to access the
Radiator and cooling fan on 1995- 98 1.5L and 1.8L (except K8) engines, begin by disconnecting the negative battery cable and emptying the cooling system. Take off the upper seal board, radiator grille and the hood safety lever. Unattach the coolant reservoir and upper and lower radiator hoses and where it has an automatic transaxle, disconnect the oil cooler lines and plug the radiator hoses. Then, unplug the electric cooling fan connector and loosen the shroud mounting bolts and remove the shroud off the radiator and leave it aside to create space. Take off the radiator brackets and take the radiator out of the car. Disassemble the cooling fan by loosening the mounting nut and then the fan blade of the fan motor then the fan motor of the shroud. To install, affix the fan motor on the shroud and screw it using mounting bolts, and affix the fan blade afterward by using some locking compound on the mounting nut. Install radiator with lower tank slipped into the insulators, radiator brackets, screwing the bolts until 70-95 inch lbs. Re-fit fan and shroud assembly, screw the bolts until 70-95 inch lbs. In case of need, reconnect the cooler lines, reconnect the wiring harness and fit the top and bottom radiator hose. Connect the wiring of the overflow tube and cooling fans and fit the wiring of the hood safety lever and screw the bolts. Install a radiator grille and upper seal board, close the radiator drain valve, fill the system with coolant and screw on the pressure cap to the first stop. Lastly, reconnect the negative battery cable, and turn on the engine and idle it at high speed until the upper radiator hose becomes hot, meaning there is a circulation of the coolant. Turn-off the engine, inspect the radiator cap, refill the coolant when necessary, screw the radiator cap on, fill up the coolant tank until the FULL line, and test-run the engine to verify there is no leakage. In the case of the 2.3L engine, it starts with the same thing of disconnecting the negative battery cable and emptying the cooling system, then removing the other components needed such as the right-hand splash shield, charge air cooler and radiator grill. Once the reservoir hose and electrical connector of the cooling fan are disconnected, disassemble the shroud and fan in the same way as outlined above. Installation is done in the opposite order, such that, all the components are well connected and the cooling system is filled. The procedure is the same except that the negative battery cable would be disconnected, the cooling system would be drained, the radiator and shroud (on other engines than the 1.5L, 2.3L, and 1995-98 1.8L) would be removed, the fan would be removed, and fan motor, and then they are reassembled in reverse. To test the cooling fan, remove the wire harness connector and ensure battery voltage is applied to the terminals depending on the fan type, and that it works and draws current and that current flow is within the acceptable ranges of single and two-speed fans. No operation of the fan can be due to replacement, and a lack of operation with battery voltage with operation with the vehicle suggests faulty operation in the cooling fan relay and engine coolant temperature sensor.
