Mazda Millenia Distributor Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install a distributor on Mazda Millenia?
    A:
Removing the distributor First mark the spark plug wires connecting to the cap with their cylinder numbers and loosen them together with the distributor wire harness plugs. Mark the distributor body to the cylinder head after which the retaining bolts and the cap are removed making sure that the match mark is not lost. Make a second match mark on the distributor body to show the direction of the rotor. In the case of gear driven distributors, pull out gradually and mark a third match where the rotor points will rotate. The first step is to pull the negative battery cable out and then loosen the distributor cap without losing the ignition wires. In SOHC engines, take off the air intake hose beside the distributor and de-connection the electrical connector(s) in the side of the distributor. Contact the crankshaft to align the No. 1 piston at Top Dead Center (TDC) during the compression stroke so that the crankshaft pulley mark aligns with the timing indicator so that the distributor rotor is facing towards the tower marking the position of the No. 1 spark plug wire. Mark the location of the distributor housing on the cylinder head and location of the rotor relative to the housing and then loosen the distributor hold-down bolt(s). Where the distributor is at the end, pull it straight away; where the distributor is at the side pull it away slowly, watching the movement of the rotor until it is not turning any more. Re-align the match marks and put on third mark, which identifies the new position of the rotor in regards to the distributor body. Check O-ring at the distributor housing and change it in case of any damage or wear. To install, grease the O-ring with engine oil and install the distributor with the marks already made and make sure that they connect with the camshaft gear. Install the distributor cap, tighten the hold-down bolt(s), attach the electrical connector(s) and air intake hose where applicable then. You should now reconnect the negative battery cable, start the engine and observe or remanipulate the ignition timing. Should the engine have been turned, then unscrew the spark wire of the No. 1 cylinder, pull out the spark plug and seal the opening with a thumb. Turn the crankshaft until one can feel pressure at the spark plug hole which is a signal that the piston is approaching TDC on the compression stroke and then proceed until the crankshaft pulley mark meets the timing cover indicator. Install the distributor, making sure that the marks line up with the No. 1 spark plug wire tower, lubricate the O-ring and align the distributor with the camshaft gear. Fasten the hold-down bolt(s), re-fit electrical connector(s) and air intake hose where present, hold the spark plug in cylinder No. 1 and re-fit the spark plug wire. Lastly, readjust the ignition timing, reconnect the negative battery cable, and start the engine.
