During the draining of the coolant, it is important to note that the ethylene glycol antifreeze may be appealing to pets thus it may be fatal once they consume them. Drain coolant in sealable container and reuse, however, do not drain contaminated coolant or coolant older than several years. In 1.5L, 1.6L, 1.8L (except K8), 2.2L engines, disconnection of the negative battery cable and draining of the
Radiator below thermostat level. In case they are required, disconnect the coolant temperature switch and remove the air cleaner assembly. Disassemble the upper radiator hose and the thermostat housing and thermostat as well, but do not forget to remove the gasket without prying up the thermostat housing. Wipe the mating surfaces and fit the thermostat with the jiggle pin in the top, fit a new gasket and install the housing with the nuts tightened to 14-22 ft.lbs. Reattach the upper radiator hose, reconnect the coolant temperature switch and then air cleaner housing, and fill the cooling system, reattach the battery, and start the engine and check that there are no leaks. Same with the 2.0L engine except the thermostat jiggle pin must fit into the gasket projection. To disassemble the DOHC (K8) engine, 2.5L engine, disconnect the battery, drain coolant, remove water outlet pipe, and housing and thermostat. Wipe the surfaces, plug in the thermostat, fit in a new O-ring, and fit the housing cover, tightening up to 14-19 ft.lbs. Replace the water pipe with a new O-ring, fill the cooling system, reconnect the battery and leak check. In the case of the 2.3L engine, remove the battery, coolant, air duct, air cleaner housing and resonator then the thermostat housing and thermostat. Wipe down the surfaces, fit the thermostat with the housing, fit the assembly and tighten up the bolts to 14-18 ft.lbs. Refit assembly, air cleaner housing, and air duct, and tighten up the bolts to 70-95 inch lbs. Lastly, fill the cooling system, re-attach the battery, start the engine and ensure that there are no leaks.
