In removing the axeshafts there is no necessity of disturbing the
Differential assembly as would be required to replace the oil seals and to remove the differential carrier when the latter is needed out of the rear axle housing. The first thing to do is to lift up the back of the car and hold it up on jackstands, and block the front wheels to get them to stay in place. Then take the rear wheels off and open the parking brake. Empty the differential lubricant into an appropriate container through the drain plug then when it is done screw the drain plug tight. Take off the brake drum, the parking brake cable and the brake line off of the wheel cylinder. Disassemble the four nuts which hold the brake backing plate to the axle housing, then disassemble the axeshaft, the brake backing plate and the brake assembly in the rear axle. In case the axleshaft is stuck, remove it with a slide hammer and axle flange adapter. In order to remove the old seal of the axle housing, one will need a seal removal tool or large screwdriver. Install the new seal with the help of a seal driver or a piece of pipe or big socket with the outside diameter, which is a little less than in the seal, and remember to lubricate the lips of the seal with multi-purpose grease. In case of replacement of the axleshaft bearing, go to dealer service department or automotive machine shop because the bearing is pressed on and held by a collar. The re-installation will be in the same sequence as the removal was done and the brake backing plate-to-axle housing nuts are tightened to the necessary torque. Once installed, fill the differential with the right kind of lubricant and bleed the brakes.
