To remove the release bearing, first raise the front of the vehicle and secure it on jackstands, then remove the transmission. The release bearing slides on a sleeve around the transmission input shaft; to detach it, slide the bearing forward until the release lever reaches its maximum travel, disengage the lever ends from the tangs on the bearing, and slide the bearing off the input shaft. A sharp tug on the release lever will help pull it off its ballstud. For inspection, hold the center of the bearing and rotate the outer portion while applying pressure; if it does not turn smoothly or is noisy, replace it. Wipe the bearing with a clean rag and check for damage, wear, and cracks, avoiding immersion in solvent as it is sealed for life. For installation, lightly lubricate the clutch lever ends and spring retention crown with high-temperature grease where they contact the bearing, and fill the inner groove of the bearing with the same grease. Snap the release lever back onto its ballstud, guide the release bearing onto the input shaft sleeve, pull the release lever to its maximum travel, and engage the lever ends with the tangs on the bearing. Apply a light coat of high-temperature grease to the face of the release bearing where it contacts the pressure plate diaphragm fingers, and also apply a light coat of grease to the input shaft sleeve before reinstalling the transmission. The remainder of the installation follows the reverse order of removal.
