The first step to eliminate the distributor is to identify the coil wire and spark plug wires with a mark which is followed by disconnecting them off the distributor cap. The second step is to remove the spark plug number one which is nearest to you when approaching the engine. Rotate the engine using the fingers to Top Dead Center on number one piston on the compression stroke. In case there are several vacuum hoses, which are attached to the distributor, it is important to label them and then unattach them. Next, break the primary wires connecting the distributor and inscribe the position of the rotor of the distributor relative to the distributor body and the distributor body relative to the engine. Unscrew the hold down bolt and the clamp and then unscrew the distributor and do not rotate the engine in the process. In installation, make sure that the number one piston is in TDC during the compression stroke then install the distributor in the engine making sure the adjusting clamp is over the hold down hole and the gear is not rotated. Install hold down bolt by positioning the already made marks on distributor housing, rotor, and engine, and tighten it. Install the distributor cap, connect the wiring and install the spark plug wires next. Lastly, re-fit the vacuum hoses as indicated and set the ignition timing.
