Mazda MPV Ignition Coil

The Mazda MPV Ignition Coil converts the meager 12 volts supplied by the battery in the van to up to 40,000 volts to allow a spark to jump off each plug and ignite the air-fuel mixture. This Ignition Coil is in the center of the ignition system, connecting the low-voltage side in the primary to the high-voltage side in the secondary with two copper windings around an iron core. In the event that the primary circuit has been charged and the breaker points, a magnetic pickup, or engine computer then suddenly open, the collapsing field causes a surge in the secondary winding which races to the plugs. The initial engines of the MPV applied only one distributor-fed coil, and therefore, one system fired all the cylinders, but it was easy and inexpensive. With the development of the model, Mazda switched to a waste-spark DIS pack with paired coils (lighting two cylinders with two revolutions) cutting moving parts to improve durability. Current models are mostly updated to the greater Mazda trend of coil-on-plug or coil-near-plug design, with each cylinder having its own hotter, more precise spark and also doing away with long high-tension leads. Even heat, vibration, cracked housings, or excessive plug-gap resistance may weaken a proud Mazda coil, resulting in misfires, rough idle, and poor mileage that can be checked with a quick multimeter test. The maintenance of the Ignition Coil is what makes the Mazda legacy a smooth ride.

Mazda MPV Ignition Coil Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What precautions should be taken when handling ignition coil terminals to prevent damage, and what steps should be followed to inspect and test the ignition coil on Mazda MPV?
    A:
When coil terminals have contact with a ground source, coil and /or pickup coil/igniter may become damaged. Start by labeling the wires and terminal with pieces of numbered tape and then take out the primary wires and the high tension lead of the coil. Then take the coil assembly out of the mount, clean the outer case, and examine it to see whether there are any cracks or other damage. Check coil primary terminals, coil tower terminal to corrosion and clean using a wire brush in case of corrosion. Test the coil primary resistance, which is done by connecting the leads of an ohmmeter to the positive and negative primary terminals, where the resistance is measured in both the first and second stages to both a four-cylinder engine and a V6 engine, and then compare the measured resistance with the values. Measure the coil secondary resistance by connecting one of the ohmmeter lead to one of the primary terminals, and connecting the other lead of the ohmmeter to the coil high-tension terminal and compare the actual resistance with the values. Determine the insulation resistance, attaching the leads of an ohmmeter to the positive terminal and ground (the igniter body) and comparing the measured insulation resistance with the specification. In case the measured resistances do not match the specifications, it is likely that there is a defect in the coil that needs to be changed. The coil terminals and leads of wire must be dry and clean, to ensure the proper functioning of the ignition system. Lastly, fit the coil into the mount and rejoin the wires, the opposite of the process of removal.
