A valve job, which involves servicing of the valves, valve seats, and valve guides, is a complex job that requires special tools and equipment and therefore should be conducted by a professional. The cutting out and dismantling of the head, a preliminary cleaning and examination, and subsequent reassembling, may be done by a home mechanic, and can then be shipped to a dealer service department, or to an automotive machine shop, where the actual work should be done. The inspection will enable an evaluation of the state of the head and valvetrain elements to make sure that one understands the amount of work and new components required when working with an automotive machine shop. Removal of valves and springs, reconditioning or replacement of the valves and valve seats, reconditioning of the valve guides, checking and replacement of valve springs, rotators, spring retainers and keepers, replacement of valve seals with new ones, reassembly of the valve components and checking the correct height of installed springs will be handled by the dealer service department or the automotive machine shop. Also, the face of the cylinder head gasket will be resurfaced in case it has been warped. After the professional has done their work on the valve job, the head will be in like-new condition. When back, the head should again be washed before putting back on the engine to remove all metal particle and grinding grit that may have been left in the process of valve service or a head resurfacing procedure and blow out all oil holes and passages with compressed air wherever possible.
