Check the ring end gaps before attaching the new piston rings and make sure that the clearance on the piston ring side has been verified. Prepare the piston/connecting rod assemblies and new ring sets to fit them in the piston and the cylinder during end gap measurement and engine assembly. Fit the upper ring into the first cylinder with the walls of the cylinder square and by pressing it in place with the top of the piston, until it rests close to the bottom of the cylinder. Finger gauges: To gauge the end gap, place the feeler gauges between the ends of the ring until a proper gauge is obtained, make certain that it slides between with a minimal degree of drag. In case of wrong gap, ensure that the rings are right and then proceed. When the gap is so narrow, file the end of the rings so that it is expanded inside out, but excess end gap is not a crucial factor except above 0.040 inch. Add rings, pistons and cylinders Repeat this same procedure with all rings, in all cylinders. After checking and correcting the end gaps, put the rings onto the pistons, with the oil control ring being the first ring fitted, it is made of three parts. Install the spacer/expander into the groove making sure you have an anti-rotation tang installed and then install the lower side rail followed by the upper side rail without a piston ring installation tool so that it will not be damaged. Install the oil ring parts after which the two side rails should rotate freely along the groove. Then screw in the middle ring with the identification mark side up and then install a piston ring with the help of a piston ring installation tool without swelling the ring too much. Lastly, fit the top ring in the same sequence and make sure that the mark it has is also facing upward and then repeat the steps with the other pistons and rings.
