Mazda MPV Sway Bar

The Mazda MPV Sway Bar is a steel torsion bar that is primarily applied to eliminate body roll by increasing the tall family van's stability when turning and over bumps. The bar connects the left and right wheels by short lever arms; when the outside wheel is lifted in a corner, the resulting twist opposes such a movement and sends part of the load onto the inside wheel, which provides roll stiffening and makes the vehicle more secure and confident to handle. All Sway Bars are constructed of high-strength steel that does not wear out when they are subjected to repeated twists. The fundamental concept is traced back to a 1919 patent, but it gained widespread use after the 1950s, when softer coil suspensions required additional stabilization, a history that has since served every Mazda people mover. The van can have the Sway Bar on the front, rear or both, depending on the model year; however, each system uses the same straightforward concept, where the bar is not connected by many complex joints but instead is a single and rigid connection. Since the system uses a solid rod rather than hydraulics or electronics, its response is predictable and the system adds little weight. Subsequent generations of Mazda continued to develop the diameter and mounting locations to adjust stiffness and handling balance, but the essence of the product has stayed the same, as the simple Sway Bar continues to be a mandatory, virtually invisible part of the chassis that ensures the comfort of the cabin and the etiquette of the road in every MPV manufactured by Mazda.

  • Q: How to properly remove and install a rear sway bar on Mazda MPV?
    A:
Lift the back of the car and rest it on the jackstands. It is important to disconnect the stabilizer bar to the body by removing the nuts, bolts, retainers, rubber bushings, and spacers on each end of the stabilizer bar in the same order as the different parts are keep in mind to remove the link bolt afterwards. The second step is to unscrew the bolts on the stabilizer bar brackets to remove the stabilizer bar out of the rear axle and remove the stabilizer bar. Check all rubber bushings, cracks or deteriorated ones should be replaced, any damaged retainers applied to the link bolts must be replaced, and any bent or damaged retainers. To install, reverse the process of removal, making certain that all the retainers, bushings, and spacers are fitted in the proper sequence, and all the fasteners are firmly tightened.
