Mazda MPV Power Steering Pump

The Mazda MPV Power Steering Pump enables drivers to turn the load of a minivan-size vehicle with car-like ease, meaning that engine torque is transformed into pressurized fluid that drives the steering rack piston in the appropriate direction. The pump is mounted on the engine and rotated with a V-belt or serpentine belt that pulls fluid either through an on-unit tank or a remote tank, directs high-pressure flow through a hose to the control valve, and allows low-pressure fluid to flow back through a second hose. When the steering wheel is in the center, the balance of pressure is maintained equally on either side of the rack piston to ensure the van moves straight, but the moment the wheel is turned the valve diverts the pressure to one side, which provides hydraulic assist on the arm that cuts steering effort at parking speeds and yet maintains a direct mechanical connection in the event of system failure. Throughout the manufacturing run Mazda had two types of pumps, a conventional constant-flow hydraulic unit on older MPV vans and a subsequent electronically adjustable one that Mazda controlled with vehicle speed and steering input information to turn down boost at highway speed and tighten feel. The typical signs of trouble are fluid leaks, belt squeal, whining from low fluid, and heavy steering during parking regardless of version, and this indicates that the Power Steering Pump, its hoses, and belt drive should be subjected to inspection. Regular monitoring of the pressure as compared to factory requirements can ensure the Power Steering Pump is still in good condition in any Mazda steering system.

Mazda MPV Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install a power steering pump on Mazda MPV?
    A:
It is necessary to disconnect the cable on the negative battery terminal in order to remove the pump. The next step is to take off the pump drivebelt. In case a new pump will be installed, remove the pulley then a punch is inserted through one of the power steering pump pulley holes and stuck in the notch of the mounting bracket to loosen up the pulley nut. Place a drain pan underneath the car and take out as much fluid as possible in pump reservoir using a suction pump and then disconnect the return line, beginning with the power steering pump return line, then the pressure line. Disconnection of the pressure line and the electrical connector of the power steering pressure switch is done using a flare-nut wrench. Unscrew the pump mounting bolts and separate the pump to the engine making sure that the remaining fluid does not spill. To install, reverse the sequence of removing, fill the reservoir with the prescribed fluid and bleed the system after that.
