Mazda MX-5 Miata Oil Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: Can the front oil seat be replaced without removing the oil pump on Mazda MX-5 Miata?
    A:
Removing the front oil seat without removing the oil pump you only need to replace the front oil seat and not the oil pump. With 2005 and older models, the battery almost always has a negative cable, and the splash shield on the under cover must be removed, the alternator and air conditioning compressor must be removed but the hoses should not be disconnected. Then, withdraw crankshaft pulley, water pump pulley, timing belt covers, timing belt, and crankshaft pulley hub then proceed to use two prybars or screwdrivers to withdraw crankshaft sprocket. Once this is done, lift out the Oil Pan and the oil pump strainer and then the oil pump bolts/nuts so as to free the oil pump and the engine block. Test the oil pump by ensuring that the oil pump is placed on a work bench, observe the distance of the oil seal placement and then remove the oil seal using a tool that removes the seal without damaging the bore of the housing. Take away the screws which hold the oil pump cover, look at see if distorted or damaged and remove the oil pressure relief valve and label the direction of goods. Wash all parts in solvent, reassemble rotors and clearance measurements. Test the oil pressure relief spring length and make sure that the surfaces of the pump house are dry and clean before putting the pump back together. Oil lightly grease a fresh oil seal with engine assembly lubricant, insert it, grease the piston of the oil pressure relief valve, and reassemble the valve parts. Apply petroleum jelly inside the pump cavities, wipe it on the cover using thread locking compound and make sure that the screen is free of debris at the end of the oil pick-up tube. To install, remove all signs of gasket and sealant on the cover and engine block, fit a new gasket with silicone sealant and reattach the oil pump to the engine block without blocking any of the oil passages. Installation should be in reverse starting with tightening the bolts, then trimming the oil pump gasket until it sits flat with the surface of the oil pan that seals it, and then lastly fit the exhaust gas intake pipe into the manifold. In the 2006 and subsequent models, detach the Timing Chain cover, chain, and the oil pan. Unscrew the bolts connecting the oil pump pick-up pipe with the pump and dispose the O-ring/gasket. The oil pump chain guide and tensioner should be removed and the oil pump drive sprocket should be held so that the sprocket does not turn and the sprocket retaining bolt should be slackened. Takes out the oil pump sprocket and unbolts the pump off the cylinder block/crankcase, including the gasket. The pump cannot be reassembled, and therefore, in case it is not operating properly, change it. Wipe and wipe the parts especially the mating surfaces, and grease the oil pump by pouring fresh engine oil into the pump and revolving the inner rotor. Install the new gasket in the oil pump, replace the pump to the cylinder block/crankcase and install the retaining bolts and tighten them to the required torque. Install new O-ring/gasket and change the pick-up pipe of the pump where tightening its retaining bolts. Fit the chain of oil pump drive with the oil pump sprocket, fit the retaining bolt tightening the oil pump drive sprocket without allowing the sprocket to swing. Connect the oil pump chain tensioner and guide and ensure all the retaining bolts are firmly assembled before attaching the timing chain, timing chain cover and oil pan.
