Mazda Protege Fuel Tank

The Mazda Protege Fuel Tank is designed in such a way that it is safe to store gasoline as well as feed it to the engine irrespective of the driving status. The tank of modern cars also hosts the electric fuel pump and the level sender in addition to being a reservoir. The internal baffles prevent sloshing of the liquid out of the pickup when the engine turns hard or when there is sudden halting; the engine will continue running smoothly and there will be minimal noise. The sealing vapors of the EVAP system with the enclosure prevent fumes from entering the air. Two basic types of construction styles have emerged over the years for the small Mazda sedan. Primitive ones were made of stamped and welded steel, which was rough but could easily rust in the presence of salt and water. The Fuel Tank version made of steel is later prone to perforation and, therefore, spilling, whereas the Fuel Tank type made of plastic does not rust but requires protection against impacts. Subsequent models were made of blow-molded high-density polyethylene, which is resistant to corrosion but has the potential to break with hard body blows or in very low temperatures. The styles are tested under pressure at the factory and then shipped with new seals and a locking ring to prevent leakage. In case the initial straps are corroded, replacing them with new ones holds the mount in check. Metal or plastic, all Mazda Protege Fuel Tanks are low at the rear where they are exposed to rain, snow, ice and gravel, but baffles and vapor controls found in its smart materials allow Mazda to keep the fuel available, quiet and contained during day-to-day driving.

Mazda Protege Fuel Tank Parts and Q&A

  • Q: Is it easier to perform this procedure with an empty fuel tank, and what steps should be taken if the drain plug cannot be removed on Mazda Protege?
    A:
The latter is far easier to do when the fuel tank is empty and this can be done with a drain plug available on some models. In case the drain plug is not removable, defer the work until the tank is empty or pump out the gas in a siphoning kit found in most auto parts stores. Start by taking out the fuel filler cap to release fuel tank pressure and also take out the cable attached to the negative terminal of the battery. In case of a full or almost full tank, empty the fuel into a suitable container and disconnection of the electrical connector and fuel lines at the Fuel Pump. The second step is to lift the vehicle and sit it safely on jackstands, and before you continue, you have to become conversant with the design of the fuel tank assembly. Take out the insulator on the front of the fuel tank and hold the tank with a floor jack, you should place a heavy plank between the jack head and the tank. Unscrew the fuel lines and evaporative hoses on the tank, but be sure to screw the hoses so the fuel system is not leaked and contaminated. Unscrew the fuel tank retaining straps bolts and then unscrew the tank out of the car. Removal is the opposite of installation.
  • Q: Should repairs to the fuel tank or filler neck be carried out by a professional due to the risks of explosive fumes on Mazda Protege?
    A:
Repairs of the fuel tank or filler neck are to be done by the experienced individual as repairing such sensitive and risky task of explosive fumes is always left even after cleaning and flushing fuel system and it may cause ignition during the repair process. When the fuel tank is taken out of the vehicle, it should not be put in a place with sparks or open flame that can cause the fumes to ignite, and care must be taken in garages where the appliances are of the gas-type.
