Mazda Protege Throttle Body

When the accelerator pedal is moved, the Mazda Protege Throttle Body controls the volume of air entering the intake passages to the engine. Between these parts lies the Throttle Body of the Mazda Protege sedan which is housed in a small casing. It is mounted in between the air cleaner and the intake manifold with a pivotal butterfly valve mounted on a shaft. When the pedal is pressed, the valve opens allowing more air into the engine, and sensors inform the Powertrain Control Module to increase injector pulse width to allow the fuel to keep up. The housing has a bypass channel that directs air to an idle air control valve that enables it to make idle speed adjustments without moving the main plate. A Throttle Position Sensor on the shaft constantly reports blade angle, assisting the computer in maintaining acceleration as well as stable cruising. Others are hardwired directly connecting the pedal and plate and others are hardwired with electronic throttle control, pedal position sensors and an internal motor to move the blade, eliminating mechanical sticking and enabling it to be integrated with traction and stability systems. With excessive mileage the shaft can wear and carbon can be deposited round the valve, causing rough idle or stalling; deposits can be removed by special cleaners, and each of the various components: the position sensor, idle valve, or electronic actuator can be replaced individually. The Throttle Body, through cable actuation or drive-by-wire, is an important air-metering assembly that assists all Mazda Protege in ensuring consistent combustion. This necessary element aids in responsive engine response throughout the mini Mazda range without compromising on emissions.

Mazda Protege Throttle Body Parts and Q&A

  • Q:
How to check and replace the throttle body,Fuel Injector,Fuel Pressure Regulator,Fuel Rail,Idle Control Valve,Intake Manifold and Throttle Position Sensor on Mazda Protege?
    A:
For the throttle body check, make sure the throttle linkage operates freely from fully closed to fully wide open. Make sure there is no obvious wear or deposit. The thin seal coating must not be removed from the throttle valves or bore. To remove the pipe, firstly, disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Then, loosen the hose clamps and take out the air intake duct. After that, detach the accelerator cable from the throttle lever. If equipped with an automatic transaxle, disconnect the throttle valve cable and cable bracket, mark and disconnect all vacuum and coolant hoses, disconnect the electrical connector from the throttle position sensor, remove the four throttle body mounting bolts, and disconnect the throttle body and gasket from the intake manifold. Using a soft-bristled brush, thoroughly clean the throttle body casing with the help of a carburetor cleaner. Remember, never clean the throttle position sensor using anything other than a cloth. To install part correctly, follow the processes in reverse order to the ones of removal, ensuring you tighten the throttle body mounting bolts to the correct torque. For the Variable Intake Control System shutter valve actuator, remove the vacuum hose from the actuator and check that it can be moved smoothly in and out. Start the engine and leave it idling. The vacuum hose should have vacuum at it. To check the throttle position sensor, disconnect the electrical connector of the sensor and insert a feeler gauge of specified thickness. Now check continuity using an ohmmeter. Modify as required, while keeping the throttle valve shut during modifications, and replace the sensor if unable to modify. To replace the fuel pressure regulator, relieve the fuel pressure. Then, disconnect the vacuum sensing hose. Next, detach the return pipe off the fuel pressure regulator and then free the mounting bolts. Finally, replace using a new O-ring. The resistance of the idle air control valve must be verified and replaced if out of range. Before removing the fuel rail with its attached injectors, it is necessary to relieve pressure from the fuel lines that connect the fuel pumps and the fuel tank and to remove the PCV hose. Install new grommets and O-rings if reusing the injectors. For air intake plenum removal, battery cable is disconnected, components removed, vacuum lines tagged and removed, throttle body assembly removed and then plenum unbolted from the intake manifold. Prior to the installation of the new gasket and plenum, clean and inspect the mounting surfaces and torque the retaining bolts.
