Mazda Protege Water Pump

The Mazda Protege Water Pump prevents frying of the engine by forcing coolant through the radiator and block to allow heat to dissipate to the air around. The Water Pump inside the engine forces coolant from the lower radiator hose through a network of jacket passages and the thermostat where it picks up heat of combustion and returns it to the radiator. The crankshaft is connected to a pulley that rotates a shaft on closed bearings, and the impeller on the opposite end pushes the fluid, although later Mazda models use an electric motor that uses a battery rather than a belt. In the Mazda family, the initial cast-iron housings were replaced by lightweight aluminum, although the mechanical and electric types have identical components, i.e., the rotating shaft, a tight seal to prevent the passage of coolant to the bearings, and an impeller that maintains a consistent flow. Electric style also is efficient in that it can be operated at variable speed and can keep circulating even when the engine is switched off as opposed to the belt-driven type which only turns as quickly as the engine. The fact that the pump is dripping colored coolant, making growling noises due to worn bearings, and is overheating caused by a broken impeller is a warning sign of a failing Water Pump. Authentic Mazda parts and regular checkups will ensure the gaskets are not ruined and the heads are not bent, ensuring that any Protege can keep it cool even when the driver has to drive a long distance or on a fast weekend trip.

Mazda Protege Water Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What are the consequences of a failure in the water pump and how can it be inspected for leaks and wear on Mazda Protege?
    A:
Failure of water pump may cause extreme over heating problems in the engine thus requiring replacement of a defective one with a new or rebuilt pump. Firstly, take away the timing belt cover(s). Water pumps have weep or vent holes, when there is a pump failure, the coolant will leak through the weep or vent hole. It may require a flash light to be used in order to identify the hole in the water pump when put under the water. In 1.8LDOHC engines, any water that might leak out of this hole will be guided to go outside the timing belt cover to avoid the timing belt damage. Also, examine the water pump shaft bearing to verify that it is not worn by holding the pump hub and rocking it back and forth, any observable looseness can be a sign of excessive wear. Should the bearings of the water pump shaft fail, there may be a howling noise during the engine running at the end of the drive belt, not to be confused with the squealing sound of the drive belt slipping, in this instance the belt condition and tension must be checked.
  • Q: How to remove and install a water pump on Mazda Protege?
    A:
To take out the water pump, you will have to first disconnect the negative battery cable to the battery. empty the cooling system, retain the coolant (when not leaking). Then pull off the water pump drive belt, pulley and timing belt cover(s) and timing belt. Remove the gasket and water inlet pipe of the water pump, and the exhaust manifold heat shield. In the case of models between the years 1990 and 1994, delete the water bypass pipe and O-ring on the water inlet pipe. In 1990-1994 1.8L DOHCs, remove the oil level gauge tube clamp at the engine block and in 1999 and 1.6L and 2.0L DOHCs, unbolt and lay aside the power steering pump. Once the front covers and the timing belt are removed, unscrew the water pump mounting bolts and unscrew the water pump to the engine, but carefully using a soft-faced hammer in case it is not easily unscrewed. Installation To install, clean the bolt threads and threaded holes on the engine to remove corrosion and sealant and all old gasket material on the sealing surface. Test the new water pump against the old one and make sure that they are the same and then put a light coat of silicone sealant on the new gasket and put it on the water pump. Install the water pump carefully to the engine, the mounting bolts and screw them to the engine without over-tightening. Install all components that have been taken off to get into the water pump, re-fill up the cooling system and also check the tension of the timing belt. Lastly, start the engine and look at leakages.
