The Mazda RX-7 Alternator converts engine movement into a continuous flow of electricity which keeps the battery charged and all the lights, gauges, and stereo active. The Mazda Alternator unit is mounted in two halves of cast aluminum, with a stationary stator and a rotor driven by a belt and spinning within the case, the pulley-mounted fan forcing cooling air through the case. The rotor has its magnetic field sweep the windings, causing AC current, which is immediately turned into DC in a rectifier containing heat-sunk diodes which is applied all over the car. Bearings hold the shaft on both ends and field current moves from the carbon brushes to the rotor, enabling output to increase and decrease with the demand. Voltage should remain within a narrow range, and therefore early Mazda sports coupes were fitted with standalone or internal regulators, but later models allowed the powertrain control module to be applied, and it would change field strength on the fly. The basic hardware remained the same across the RX-7 series, but capacity increased and the regulation moved outside boxes to PCM control, providing more consistent power to increasing electronic loads. All Mazda Alternators thus combine light aluminum, forced air cooling, solid-state rectification and electronic control to provide reliable current at idle or redline, and the Alternator is as much a part of everyday driving as the rotary.
