Mazda Timing Chain Tensioner

The Mazda timing chain tension keeps the right level of tension on the timing chain to keep it moving at the same pace as the other parts of the engine. However, how do you check whether there is a problem with your timing chain tensioner or not? Listen for the following: Squeaking or rattling sound from the front part of the engine. Chain-slapping sound from the front engine when you are next to the pulleys as the car is running. Moreover, if your vehicle doesn't start at all, there might be some looseness on the other side of the tensioner. Therefore, always take note that the correct tension in this car's timing chain is very crucial. If you suspect any issues with the Mazda timing chain tensioner, it is advisable to replace it immediately.

Whenever you need replacements, opt for genuine Mazda Timing Chain Tensioners. Because they meet the manufacturer's criteria, it guarantees that replacements fit perfectly. Mazda Timing Chain Tensioner Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove the Timing Chain, Timing Chain Tensioner and Timing Cover on Mazda 3?
    A:
The timing chain cover can be removed by firstly disconnecting the negative battery terminal by first removing the battery cover. Unscrew the water pump pulleys bolts and take out the drive belt, drive belt idler pulley and the water pump pulley. The second step is to take the crankshaft pulley off making sure that the engine does not leave TDC. Removal of the upper engine cover: Lift off the engine cover uppermost on the mounting posts and disconnect the electrical connector of Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor, and remove the sensor, remember that sensor needs to be replaced every time. Access the engine by lifting it at the top and lift it so that one can take off the engine mount to the right and should one be required, loosen the mounting bracket and lay aside the power steering hoses. Take off the timing chain cover by removing the crankshaft front oil seal then the bolts. Installation requires reversal of the removal instructions with the note to clean all surfaces of the parts of the sealant mating, installing the engine cover within the four minutes following the application of RTV sealant, tightening the bolts in sequence to the recommended torque, and fitting a new CKP sensor with the alignment tool without tightening the mounting bolts of the sensor. In order to strip the timing chain and tensioner, you have to remove the timing chain cover, then pull the ratchet arm of the tensioner couple of inches away by the ratchet stem and press the tensioner piston by pushing on it using a pin. In the event that the ratchet requires resetting, put the tensioner in the vise, release the tension and put the ratchet back in place. Disassemble the tensioner mounting bolts and tensioner, the loose timing chain guide and timing chain. The camshaft sprockets and guide to the left chain may be removed in case of necessity. To install, first remove the camshaft alignment tool (unless it was already installed), loosen the camshaft sprocket bolts but do not remove them and then install the left chain guide (unless removed). Next, place the timing chain and the right chain guide, the timing chain tensioner, screw the fastensers and then eliminate the pin to connect the chain guide. Tighten the bolts of the camshaft sprocket and install the camshaft alignment tool again, when doing so, do not depend on the alignment tool. Lastly, the timing chain cover could be fitted.
  • Q: How to remove and install the Timing Chain, Timing Chain Tensioner and Timing Cover on Mazda 6?
    A:
In order to remove timing chain cover, disconnect the negative battery cable first, and loosen the water pump pulley bolts and remove the drive belt, drive belt idler pulley and water pump pulley. The next step is to remove the crankshaft pulley keeping the engine in TDC and the valve cover open. Unscrew the electrical connector of Crankshaft Position sensor and unscrew the sensor, and remember that a new sensor should be used every time. Hold the engine in high place and lift it such that the right engine will be unattached. Before removing the bolts and the timing cover, disconnect the electrical connector to the power steering pressure switch, unbolt the power steering pump with the hoses not disconnected, and remove the crankshaft front oil seal. Installation requires that the removal steps be reversed with one following the removal of the RTV sealant ensuring that the mating surfaces are clean, the engine cover is installed within four minutes of the RTV sealant being applied, the bolts are tightened one at a time to the specified torque, the engine is re-timed and the sensor mounting bolts are not tightened until the installation tool is in place. To remove the timing chain and tensioner, remove the timing chain cover then hold the chain tensioner ratchet arm out of the way, compress the timing chain tensioner piston with a pin to hold the piston in the compressed position. In case the ratchet requires resetting, take off the tensioner, unstrain the tension on the ratchet mechanism, and putting back the tensioner. Installation Once the two tensioner mounting bolts have been removed, loosen the loose timing chain guide and timing chain and, depending on the installation, loosen the left chain guide and camshaft sprockets. Installation involves, removing a camshaft alignment tool (1) should it be installed, loosening, but not removing both left sprocket camshaft bolts, ensuring that the camshaft is in place and then attaching the left chain guide, timing chain and right chain guide. Install the tensioner of timing chain, screw the fasteners and unscrew the pin to connect to chain guide. Install the camshaft alignment tool again and tighten the camshaft sprocket bolts using the camshafts but do not just use the alignment tool. Lastly, fit timing chain cover.
