For 2004 and earlier models with a column-mounted shifter, start by disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal and waiting at least two minutes. Remove the steering wheel/airbag module, steering column covers, clockspring, multi-function switch, and ignition switch. Detach the shift cable from the steering column shift lever, disconnect the electrical connector and wiring harness, and remove the three shift lever mounting fasteners before taking out the lever. Installation is the reverse of removal, and after reconnecting the battery, the Powertrain Control Module must relearn its idle and fuel mixture trim strategy for optimal performance. For console-mounted shifters, gently pry up the shift lever trim ring, remove the finish plate, disconnect the electrical connector, detach the shift cable from the ball stud, disconnect any remaining electrical connectors, and remove the four bolts to lift the assembly out of the console, with installation being the reverse of removal. For models from 2005 to 2007, disconnect the negative battery terminal, turn the key On, and place the shifter lever in Drive. Carefully pry up the oval trim ring around the selector lever, remove the top trim panel, detach the end of the cable from the shift lever, disconnect the wiring from the shifter assembly, and remove the mounting bolts to take out the shifter, with installation being the reverse of removal. For 2008 to 2012 models, disconnect the negative battery terminal, use a trim tool to pry up the rectangular trim around the shifter, remove the interior tray, and the top panel from the console. Detach the end of the cable from the shift lever, disconnect the wiring harness, pull the 4WD module rearward if applicable, remove the screws from the center console, and take out the shifter, with installation being the reverse of removal. For 2013 and later models, remove the center console, pry the shift cable end from the shift lever, remove the retainer securing the shift cable housing, disconnect the shift lever electrical connector, and remove the nuts and bolts securing the shift lever assembly before taking it out of the vehicle, with installation being the reverse of removal and requiring adjustment of the shift cable.
