Mazda Tribute Hood Latch

The Mazda Tribute Hood Latch ensures the hood remains closed at all times to prevent the occurrence of the hood lifting and trapping the driver, thus protecting the important components of the car, the engine, radiator, and battery, among others, against unexpected exposure. Throughout all years of production, the latch system is based on a simple cable design, with one interior handle paired with a steel cord that goes to a front-mounted catch. The handle is pulled by the driver, who is sitting low next to the seat or under the steering column; the cable pulls the catch, and the hood opens up just enough to allow fingers to access the safety hook which completes the release. Having the release lever in the cabin, Mazda ensures that road debris or curious individuals cannot open it accidentally. There were two key strategies over time in the market, one of a traditional factory latch and another one of a pin-only system applied on race cars, but none of the stock Tribute sport-utilities would abandon the factory pattern to make it easier to use on a daily basis. That factory Hood Latch uses the tension of the springs of the front catch to keep the hood closed even when the car is bumped around, and the secondary hook is applied as a stop until it is deliberately lifted by a human. Checking that the handle is running freely, that the cable does not fray, and that the front mechanism snaps crisply, when these parts are so, it is the Hood Latch that offers no noise but provides extremely valuable protection, trip after trip. Frequent maintenance is in compliance with Mazda service, and through the use of well-tested hardware, Mazda offers confidence to the owners.

Mazda Tribute Hood Latch Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the hood latch and hood release cable on Mazda Tribute?
    A:
In order to change the hood latch, one should make a mark on its position to align the mounting bolts during installation. Unscrew the cable outer sleeve, press the locking tabs on the cable housing, disconnecting the cable end with it and the latch mechanism, later versions may be of a different design but the removal procedure remains similar. Later models have an electrical connector that should be disconnected and the latch removed. To install, follow the reversal procedure of the removal steps, be sure to have the latch set to a tight fit to the hood, with the bumpers compressed slightly. At the passenger compartment, find the release lever which is on the lower dash panel in older models and the kick panel in later ones. Detailed instructions on taking off the release handle are on the illustrations and include lifting the handle up and pushing tabs or unlocking an access cover on lever-type handles. Disconnect the cable end with the lever and the kick panel trim to reach the cable bracket. Now take a bit of thin wire or a piece of string and tie it to the end of the cable, then in the engine compartment, unplug the hood release cable of latch assembly and unclip all the retaining clips. Pull the cable forward until the wire or string becomes visible and then move it over to the new cable. To gain access, it may be required to remove battery tray and unbolt battery junction box. Installation of the new cable This cable should be pulled back through the firewall and make sure the grommet is in place. Install the new cable back into the hood release lever and then pull until the cable snaps into position in the grommet. Installation Reversing the steps of removal will complete the installation.
