Mazda Tribute A/C Compressor

At the center of the SUV climate system is the Mazda Tribute A/C Compressor that pressurizes refrigerant to ensure the car cabin is chilled on hot days. It draws the low-pressure vapor from the inlet, presses the vapor to a high-pressure and high-temperature state and forces the hot gas into the condenser where the heat is removed by outside air. Once the refrigerant has cooled and become partially liquid, it is passed to the evaporator, where it is flashed back into a gas and absorbs heat from the interior air as it is forced across evaporator fins by the blower. This is a closed system that relies on the A/C Compressor rotating with the engine and keeps the passengers cool as long as the pressure does not exceed specification. During the production run two styles of compressor emerged, one designed to use the older R12 refrigerant and the other designed to use the newer R134a, the difference being in the lubricant that they need, since a lubricant that is compatible with R12 will be damaging to an R134a unit. As of the early 2000s, models were already available with the R134a design, and the refrigerant label under the hood should be checked before ordering parts when one is reviving an aging Mazda. Proper A/C Compressor matching to the system prevents leakage of the system, provides efficient pumping of the system and maintains the safety of the seals, maintaining the closed circuit clean. Use of an incorrect compressor or oil may reduce your cooling efficiency and overwork your Mazda air conditioning loop to cause higher cabin temperatures. Subsequent Tribute models use the same fundamental concept, but with an enhanced R134a compressor that has better environmental performance and reliable temperature control of your Mazda on long summer trips.

Mazda Tribute A/C Compressor Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What steps should be followed when replacing an A/C Compressor in an air conditioning system on Mazda Tribute?
    A:
When changing the A/C Compressor, the accumulator/receiver/drier and the orifice tube/TXV valve should be replaced as well. Start with a dealer service department or an automotive air conditioning shop emptying the air conditioning system. Slacken right front wheel lug nuts, lift up vehicle and place on jackstands and then take off right front wheel. Then take the right front fender splash shield and (2013 and later models) engine splash shield off. Unscrew the drivebelt, and remove the electrical connector(s) to the compressor, being sure to disconnect the connector on the compressor clutch field coil on 2007 and earlier models, and also on 2013 and later 2.0L models, disconnect the two electrical connectors. In 1.5L and 1.6L models, unscrew the compressor mounting nut and the stud with a reverse Torx socket, and be sure not to leave the compressor suspended on the lines. Unscrew compressor mounting bolts and lower compressor to get to refrigerant line fittings when need be. Unscrew the refrigerant lines of the compressor and dispose of the O-rings, and finally take out the compressor without any oil dripping through. In case of installation of a new compressor, put the right amount of oil in the compressor by draining the old compressor, then pour the same amount of fresh oil in the new compressor and install the compressor drain plug securely. Clutch might be required to be changed between old compressor to new one. Prior to reconnecting the inlet and outlet lines, change all the manifold O-rings and lubricate them with refrigerant oil. Installation is the opposite of removal where compressor fasteners are tightened to the required torque readings. Lastly, change the accumulator or the receiver/drier and the orifice tube or the TXV valve, and evacuate, refill and leak test the system by the shop that emptied it.
