1997 Mazda MPV Sway Bar Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install a front sway bar on 1997 Mazda MPV?
A: The stabilizer bar requires removal and this would entail first loosening the lug nuts on both the front wheels and then lifting the vehicle and then placing it firmly on jackstands before removing the front wheels. Then unscrew the engine undercover and then the nuts of the stabilizer bar-to-control arm link bolts removing the retainers, rubber bushings, spacers, and link bolts in order of removal so that when they are replaced they can be in their place. Then take off the bolts of the stabilizer bar bushing brackets which are attached up front of the frame and are facing forward after which remove the stabilizer bar itself and the clamps and bushings. Check the bushings to make sure they are not worn or damaged and change them where necessary by using a screwdriver to pry the bushing clamp off the bushing and pulling the bushings off the bar; to install the bushings easily, spray the inside and outside of the bushing with a silicone based lubricant, but do not apply any lubricants based on petroleum. To install, attach the bushings and brackets to the stabilizer bar, and then position the bar in place and install the bracket bolts and link bolts, and fit the link bolts firmly and yet loosely fit the bracket bolts. Lastly screw the wheels, lower the car, and connect the lug nuts to the required torque and then screw the bushing bracket bolts to the required torque.
