How does the Flywheel function in the removal and installation of a transaxle on Mazda 3?

Removal of the transaxle requires initially inspecting parts of the transaxle such as oil seals and changing them when the need arises. Manual transaxle models: To get in to the release bearing and inspection or replacement of the clutch components, remove the clutch and then inspect or replace the release bearing. Mark alignment marks on flywheel and crankshaft so that replacement can be easily done because the holes of bolts are somewhat off and will fit only in one direction. Keep the flywheel/driveplate in place as the bolts are unscrewed; to ensure that the flywheel/driveplate does not rotate, use a transaxle mounting bolt into the cylinder block, have an assistant hold a screwdriver with the teeth of a starter ring gear. Unscrew and take off all the bolts, make sure to get new ones to put on in case of reassembling since the bolts undergo extreme stresses. Removed very carefully the heavy flywheel/driveplate. Dust the flywheel and clean with grease and oil, and examine cracks and rivet grooves and burnt spots and marks of scoring, which can be taken out with emery cloth. Inspect teeth of ring gear which are broken or cracked, and test warpage with straight-edge. Clean and check the mating surfaces of the flywheel and crankshaft, and replace the oil seal as leaking particularly in high mileage engines. When the flywheel is not in contact, clean the inboard face and clean the recesses of the crankshaft speed/position sensor and make sure the sensor is firmly in place. To install the engine/transaxle adapter plate, the engine/transaxle adapter plate should be installed and then the flywheel/driveplate installed on the crankshaft and all the holes aligned with the marks left during removal. Install new bolts and tighten them manually, screwing the flywheel as in the process of disassembling. Install the new bolts in a diagonal order to the required torque and finish the installation by reversing the process used to remove them.

The inertia of the disc balances the discontinuous power strokes of combustion as the disc acts as a heavy spinning reservoir of kinetic energy that means the wheels are given uniform torque rather than bursts. Its rim is surrounded by teeth, which engage the starter motor to turn the engine until the ignition mechanism takes over, and the wide face provides the gripping part to which the clutch disc clamps itself every time the gears are changed. There are two predominant designs in Mazda production, namely the traditional solid steel Flywheel and the dual mass Flywheel, or DMF. The hard material is in the form of a single piece that may be occasionally lightly ground to eliminate heat scars or slight warpage, although Mazda restrictions on material removal must be followed. The primary and secondary plates are positioned in a DMF with a damping pack that is loaded in spring and filters the vibration, and a gear change will feel smoother, but this complicated design cannot be resurfaced and rattles or shudders as its internal springs wear out, so the only solution is replacement.
