Mazda 6 Clutch Master Cylinder

The Mazda 6 Clutch Master Cylinder turns every press of your left foot into the hydraulic pressure that allows the gearbox uncoupling to take place smoothly. This small pump is placed behind the firewall and connected directly to the brake pedal, directing brake-grade fluid into a small line that sends it to the slave unit as the volume of fluid changes, with the receiving piston sliding away from the flywheel and allowing the change of gears with no grinding. The Clutch Master Cylinder gives the pedal a solid, reliable feel, facilitates fast engagement, and spares the transmission from unjustified wear. There is a small bore inside, rubber seals, and a return spring that combine to ensure that the pressure builds immediately on the down-stroke, and the fluid withdraws in a clean manner once the pedal is released. In case the seals are torn open or air penetrates the circuit, owners can observe a mushy pedal, dripping fluid around the firewall, or slowness in changing the gears, indicating that the component can no longer sustain pressure. Over the years of production of the Mazda 6, Mazda did not switch to cables or electronic actuators and instead continued with the same basic hydraulic design, thus, regardless of what model of Mazda you are driving, diagnosis and operation have not changed. Since the Clutch Master Cylinder operates in a closed loop with the slave cylinder, the easy method to ensure sharp shifts and long life of your drivetrain is to keep the fluid in its fresh state without any bubbles, so it is this humble component that makes every Mazda 6 an engaging drive.

Mazda 6 Clutch Master Cylinder Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install the clutch master cylinder on Mazda 6?
    A:
In order to take off the upper engine cover, lift it up by sides and off the mounting posts at the middle. The second step is to remove the battery tray and battery. In 2010 and subsequent models, delete the cowl panel and PCM together with its bracket. Install clamp locking pliers on the feed hose of the clutch fluid a few inches below the brake fluid reservoir to stop the flow of fluid and then detach the hose of the reservoir to the clutch master cylinder. Install a flare-nut wrench to loosen the fitting of a hydraulic line at the cylinder and place some rags to receive any spilled fluid and hold up or plug the ends of the line to prevent leakage and contamination. Take out the two nuts that hold the clutch master cylinder on the firewall and disassemble the cylinder. During installation, install the master cylinder on the firewall, then insert the rod of the clutch pedal to the cylinder and then install the interior mounting nut finger tight. Assemble the hydraulic line fitting to the clutch master cylinder and screw it finger tight, after which the engine-side mounting nut is screwed to a certain torque and the hydraulic line fitting is screwed. Connect the fluid feed hose, which is on the reservoir to the clutch master cylinder and close the hose clamp and pulling out the locking pliers. Tighten the left over mounting nut underneath the dash and replace the PCM. Lastly, fill the reservoir with DOT 3 specification brake fluid and bleed the clutch system.
