Mazda 6 Shift Cable Parts and Q&A

  • Q:
Is replacing the shift cable in a vehicle a challenging procedure for home mechanics in automatic transmission on Mazda 6?
    A:
Replacing the cables involves taking off the instrument panel and removing the HVAC housing, making this a challenging procedure for home mechanicals. Get the air conditioning system discharged by a technician first. If the engine has recently been used, allow a few hours to cool down before disconnecting the battery connection cables and waiting at least two minutes. Following this, take out the heater core/evaporator core housing after taking off the centre console with the battery and tray. Disconnecting, removing the airbag module at the front console area, and removing the insulation pad. Releasing the clips securing the airbag module harness. Remove the cable from the shift assembly and unclip the cable housing end's clips. Take off the underinstrument panel floor insulation to access the fasteners that attach the cable grommet to the floor pan and remove them. To disconnect the shift cable at the control arm for the transaxle, lift the cable end to take the pressure off the spring clip and rotate to remove. On some models, two clips must be squeezed to release the cable from the ball-stud. Be careful not to break the spring clip which is used to release the clips to remove the cable housing end from the transaxle mounting bracket. Remove any cable retainers along the length of the cable, then pull the shift cable through the floor. Notice that the grommet comes on the cable. The reverse process of removing is called installing, and post-installation the cable should be adjusted. After venting the cooling system, refill it. A shop that vented the system should evacuate, recharge and leak test it. To make adjustments, set the parking brake and detach the negative battery terminal. Take off the air filter housing and place the shifter in Drive; remove the cable eye from the control arm on the transaxle. You should move the shift arm by hand at the transaxle to Drive and then to Park as required for the transaxle type. The adjuster mechanism on the interior end of the shift cable; by moving the safety lock back, the lock piece can be moved outward, perssed into the cable, and slid back into position. Following the reinstallation of the remaining components, apply the parking brake and operate the vehicle in each range to check the adjustment.
  • Q:
Is replacing the shift cable in a vehicle a challenging procedure for home mechanics in manual transmission on Mazda 6?
    A:
Replacing the cables is a difficult job for home mechanics as it involves removing the instrument panel and the HVAC module. Have the air conditioning system first discharged by a technician. To allow the engine to cool down if the car has recently been driven and then give the auto repair both battery cables with at least two minutes. Next, remove battery and battery tray; center console and heater core/evaporator core housing, and so on. For models from 2008 and prior, remove the clips that attach the shift linkage cables to the shift lever arms at the transaxle. Do not damage the spring clips. The clips can be rotated for easier removal. For model years 2009 and later, pry the shift cable and selector cable from the ball studs on the shift lever arms using a small screwdriver. Detach the cable tube end fittings from the support bracket at the transaxle carefully without damaging them. Unplug the airbag module from the attachment on the floor and remove insulation pad. Release the clips holding the airbag module harness. Take off the fasteners that hold the transmission cable plate/geometer in position and pull the shift cables through the floor. Installation, the reverse of removal, is ensured by adjusting the new cable afterwards. Refill and air the cooling system, then have the shop that discharged it evacuate, charge, and leak test it. For adjustment, apply the parking brake, removing the gearshift knob and the centre console trim panel, move the safety lock away from the shifter ball stud and the cable lock away from the selector cable end fitting. Position the shift lever in the centre position, and ensure the lever and transaxle is in Neutral. Push the cable lock on to the cable and slide the safety lock over the primary shift cable lock. Reinstall the centre console trim panel and the gearshift knob.
