Mazda 6 Cylinder Head

The sealed roof of each combustion chamber is the Mazda 6 Cylinder Head, which directs the mixture of air and fuel in and exhaust out to ensure that the engine produces powerful and reliable force. It is mounted over the pistons of the engine and contains the 6 spark plugs, intake passages, exhaust ports, coolant channels, and moving valves, which open and close with each stroke. The previous sedans applied cast-iron castings, but later Mazda 6 versions applied aluminum heads that made the nose light, spread heat quicker, and could withstand more compression to give livelier acceleration. Regardless of the material applied, Mazda bolts the head in with torque-to-yield bolts, which lengthen in their intended capacity, distribute the clamping force uniformly, and aid in ensuring that the gasket does not leak. Once that seal is gone, it can cause coolant and oil to mix, the cylinders may misfire, and the temperature can skyrocket, which are all signs of a blown gasket or a broken casting. The frequent wear problems that include loose guides, worn valve springs, or burned valves can also help to choke airflow and rob horsepower. However, the critical part of the Cylinder Head has always been the same, to get the great amount of breathing while at the same time keeping the combustion pressure down to ensure that every stroke is quick and easy. In every new generation, Mazda 6 enhances the form of ports, as well as strengthens the key areas, and it is evident that a properly designed Cylinder Head is the key to high performance and long life.

Mazda 6 Cylinder Head Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How is the procedure for removing and installing cylinder heads for V6 engine on Mazda 6?
    A:
This process is possible only when the engine is out on 3.7L V6 engines. Start by depressing the fuel system and unplugging the cable on the negative battery terminal. Empty the cooling system and take air out of the upper and lower intake manifolds. Having the vehicle on the ground, with it elevated and held in place, the front oxygen sensors and the catalytic converters are disconnected, then the CHT sensor, catalytic converter monitor sensor, and the Camshaft position sensors are disconnected. Take out the camshafts in the cylinder head to be removed and loosen up any bolts or clips holding the wiring harnesses or ground straps attached to the cylinder heads. Disassemble the exhaust (or exhausts) and any other parts that may come between the cylinder head removal. Unscrew the hoses and the electrical connectors of the coolant bypass tube and afterwards unscrew the two fasteners of the coolant bypass tube. Unscrew one cylinder head bolt after another, in the opposite sequence of the tightening sequence, and when all the bolts are loosened, remove and dispose of them and install new torque-to-yield cylinder head bolts. The cylinder head should be removed and laid on a workbench without damaging the mating surface of the cylinder head and engine block. Wipe the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and vice-cleanse, inspecting thoroughly, checking out nicks or deep scratches, and correct any cylinder head gasket surface warpage with a straightedge. Make sure that the two locating dowels have been installed in the block of the cylinder and all the holes of the cylinder head bolts are clear of contamination. Install and reinstall over the locating dowels; new cylinder head gaskets, and reinstall and re-tighten by hand new cylinder head bolts. Do the tightening of the bolts following the order of tightening according to the torque to yield method. Install the rest of the components in the order they were removed tightening the fasteners to the required torque values. Rechange the engine oil and filter and fill and bleed the cooling system. Lastly, turn on the engine and inspect leakages.
  • Q: How to remove and install a cylinder head for four cylinder engine on Mazda 6?
    A:
Removing the cylinder head take a set of steps to release the fuel pressure and disconnect the cable on the negative battery terminal. Take off intake duct of the air filter housing, alternator and its air duct where the air duct will be found, drain the cooling system, and remove the coolant expansion tank. Then take out the Timing Chain, Camshafts, being careful to verify the clearances of the valves. Unhook the camshaft position sensor, the electrical connector, and unbolt the oil control valve of the cylinder head. Take out fuel rail and injectors, thermostat housing, Intake Manifold, and Exhaust Manifold. In case of an engine support fixture or hoist, the support should not touch the cylinder head removal, support the engine using a floor jack and block of wood. Tighten the cylinder head bolts gradually and then raise the cylinder head out of the engine compartment but without destroying the cylinder head. After detaching, dispose of the gasket and look after doweling location. To check, clean the faces of the mating of the cylinder head and block them well; no carbon should be allowed to enter the passes of oil and water. Inspect the mating surfaces to see if there are any nicks or scratches and refer to automotive machine shop in case of necessity. Installation Australia) To install, clean again, place alignment dowels (where applicable), place a new gasket with the top mark upward, and guide studs to aid in the cyclic head placement. Apply to threads of new cylinder head bolts small coating of engine oil, screw them into place until finger-tight and screw them in place in the order given. Lastly, put back the other parts in the reverse order, switch the engine oil and filter, and refill the cooling system.
