Mazda 6 Harmonic Balancer

The Mazda 6 Harmonic Balancer is the bodyguard of the crankshaft that absorbs twisting vibrations that might rattle the engine and reduce its life. In Mazda cars, the unit is concealed at the front of the crank and is connected to the shaft by a steel hub, a massive outer inertia ring, and a hardy rubber layer in between. When combustion pulses attempt to twist the shaft out of shape, the rubber stretches, permitting the ring to lag just enough to cancel the shock wave. A few of these units are added to previous or high-output models, which require small counterweights so that they also evenly balance the weight of the pistons and rods as they revolve. Irrespective of trim year, all the factory balancers in the 6 line retain the same three-piece rubber-isolated layout, the only distinction being the presence or absence of the additional weight. A good balancer keeps the revs smooth, the parts quiet, and prevents stress creaks in the crank. The rubber is gradually eaten away by heat, oil splash, and winter road salt, which cause it to become either sticky or brittle, and once the rubber loses its elasticity the Harmonic Balancer will no longer be able to track the crank correctly, allowing rough oscillations to pass through the block. Drivers who observe new vibrations during idle operation or notice the pulley wobbling on the Mazda should replace the Harmonic Balancer early enough since further driving may cause costly damage to the crankshaft. Regular inspection ensures all Mazda vehicles run reliably for years.

Mazda 6 Harmonic Balancer Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to properly remove and install the harmonic balancer to ensure alignment and prevent engine damage on Mazda 6?
    A:
To take off the harmonic balancer, make sure that both the crankshaft and timing sprocket are not loosened or it will put the engine out of time which will create serious damage. Start by taking out the drive belt and the right drive axle. Install the engine in line with the relevant locking tools. The crankshaft should not rotate when unscrewing the balancer bolt and as such, a special holding tool is needed that could be bought or made. Install the holding tool into the balancer and rotate the balancer bolt with a large wrench to make sure that the crankshaft is fixed with the holding tool. The next step is to unscrew the balancer bolt and then take off the balancer looking behind it and a diamond washer (behind the balancer) then replacing it with a new one (diamond washer) on the engines. To install, put a new diamond washer onto the crankshaft, spray the front seal a little with clean engine oil and fit the harmonic balancer. Install a new balancer bolt and washer with a hand tighten and position the hole at the top of the balancer in line with the timing chain cover. Aligning of the crankshaft is done using a crankshaft balancer alignment bolt, and then a balancer bolt is tightened to the required amount. Take out the timing pin, the camshaft alignment tool, the holding tool and alignment bolt. Turn the engine two full rotations clockwise, watching against resistance, which could be evidence of wrong valve timing. Once more rotate the engine to TDC, and fit the timing pin, and ensure the alignment with the crankshaft balancer aligning bolt. When this is not aligned, repeat the installation procedure up to the time the alignment has been done. After aligning, take out all the tools and bolts, put in the timing pin plug and put the components that have been taken out earlier.
