Mazda 6 Hood Latch

The Mazda 6 Hood Latch is to ensure that the hood is securely closed, and as a result wind or bumps will never lift the hood up as you drive, exposing the engine, radiator, battery, and other important components. This small yet heavy catch of the Hood Latch is located at the front tip of the hood and operates together with an in-cabin handle and a steel cable. A handle is pulled by a driver at the bottom of the steering wheel or by the side of the seat; the cable will pull the Hood Latch assembly, and the hood will pop open to allow it to be inspected or repaired safely. Through the entire life cycle of the 6, Mazda has remained with this three-piece system due to the fact that it provides a mechanical connection that is not compromised even when the electrical connection is disconnected. No electronic versions, no special pins on factory models, and thus all Mazda owners are applied to the same common order, interior pull, exterior lift. The fundamental design has remained constant, but minuscule annual adjustments reposition the handle a bit to make it ergonomically friendly and adjust the spring tension to a more comfortable release, and such modifications never change the fundamental objective of the Hood Latch or the way it is applied. Regular washing and the occasional application of lubricant keep it swinging freely so that Mazda remains safe and secure mile after mile.

Mazda 6 Hood Latch Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove the hood latch and hood release cable on Mazda 6?
    A:
The first step to the removal of the hood latch is firstly to detach the cable to the negative battery terminal. Mark a line on the latch to match up when fitting, remove the retaining bolts attaching the hood latch to the radiator support and remove the latch. Be careful to ensure that the front airbag crash sensor is attached with the hood latch mounting bolt so as not to hit or drop the sensor and therefore not to cause damage to the sensor or activate the airbag. Secondly, pull the cable out of the bracket to release the cable out of the latch assembly and pull the cable end plug out of the latch. In the case of the release cable, in the engine compartment, loosen the hoodlatch and separate the hood release cable with the hoodlatch. Next, take out the front Bumper cover and the headlight housing. Unscrew the lug nuts of the wheel, place the vehicle safely on jackstands and take away the left front wheel and the inner fender splash shield. Unscrew the release cable clips of fender and wiring harness. Within the car, press the pull lever along with a small screwdriver to press the locking tab down. Using the tab, push the handle up and out of the instrument panel, snap the release cable out of the handle and push it through the firewall. The opposite of removal is installation.
