Mazda 6 Ignition Coil

The core element of the Mazda 6 spark system is the Ignition Coil, which boosts the 12-volt output of the battery to the tens of thousands of volts required to ignite each spark plug and launch the air-fuel mixture into a blaze of certain effortless power. Within its polymer casing are primary and secondary wires of copper around an iron core. Whenever the key is on, current is conducted through the thicker primary wire to create a magnetic field, after which the electronic control unit breaks the circuit rapidly, the field dissipates, and the secondary winding starts discharging up to 40,000 volts through the high-tension tower to the plug. Previous Mazda 6 models applied a single Ignition Coil coupled with a distributor, which sent the surge to all the cylinders via a rotating rotor and long plug leads. Subsequent Mazda 6 vehicles moved to distributorless ignition systems, where two or more coils are bundled together in a pack, and a waste spark system ignites two cylinders simultaneously, one of which is merely expelling exhaust. The new implementations employ Coil-on-Plug or Coil-Near-Plug designs with each of the six cylinders having its own small Ignition Coil to provide cleaner timing, faster energy flow and a lower count of high-voltage conductors. Throughout all these generations the objective remains the same, efficient voltage change with little energy waste, to have Mazda engines operate cleaner, idle more stably, and with a faster response when the accelerator is released.

Mazda 6 Ignition Coil Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to disconnect the ignition coil from the spark plug on Mazda 6?
    A:
Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Remove the upper engine cover by pulling the cover up from each side and lifting it off the mounting posts in the center of the cover. On V6 engines, remove the upper intake manifold. Disconnect the electrical connector from the ignition coil. Remove the mounting fastener from the ignition coil. Grasp the coil firmly and pull it off the spark plug (Remove the coil assembly from the spark plug tube). Installation is the reverse of removal.
