In order to install and replace the brake parts, the first thing to do is to buy a cheap brake spring tool that is easy to use. In the case of 2-wheel drive, lift up and place the rear end on jackstands, taking all necessary precautions against asbestos. Disconnect the parking brake link and cable, remove the springs, retracting springs, holddown springs and guide pins and disassemble them. Remember to remove the adjusting pawl and spring and then the shoes after which the longer lining shoe will be in a different location. Check the work of the shoes and wipe the backing plate with authorized fluid. Apply lubrication to the thread of the starwheel and the pads on which the shoes are mounted. To install the parking brake, loosen the parking brake lever to the new parking brake shoe, fit the shoes, reconnect the
Parking Brake Cable, and install the holddown springs, pawl adjustment and screw assembly. Fit the retracting springs and drums after which the screw of the star wheel should be adjusted until the wheel has been locked, drawing it back a notch or two to allow the star wheel to rotate freely. Open the parking brake and use brake pedal bleeding down the system as needed. In the case of 4-wheel drive, repeat the same steps, but the first phase is to raise the rear end and take the wheels off. Take out the brake drum, the parking brake cable, and holddown spring assemblies, self-adjusting lever, and so on. Clean and inspect shoes, clean backing plate, oil. Install the brake shoes, the parking brake, and the other parts, and screw the star-wheel then tighten the screw until it is locked and then unscrew it to allow it to rotate freely. Lastly, set the parking brake and use the brake pedal, bleeding the system as required.
