Careful steps to take are to elevate the front side on jackstands, remove the brake drum and shoes, then install and remove the parts. Disassemble the brake line at the wheel cylinder and insert, then detach the nuts at the back of the backing plate of the wheel cylinder to extract the wheel cylinder and the reverse of the process to put the wheel cylinder back. In the case of the overhaul, begin by removing the wheel cylinder and then remove the piston and adjusting screw, then the boot and the adjuster. Introduce compressed air in the inlet port to blow out the piston cup, expander, and spring and clean all of the parts in clean brake fluid. Look at all parts, wearing, discoloured, misshapen, or suspicious, replace. The bore of the cylinder can be honed, to remove light scoring, pitting, or discolouring, but when honing is not possible to polish the inside, dispose of the cylinder. Verify piston to bore clearance and in case it is more than 0.15mm (0.0059 in.), change of cylinder. Install the parts in the reverse sequence of their disassembly, ensuring that all parts are coated with clean brake fluid before installation and finally the wheel cylinder and all other components are installed, bleed the system.
