To adjust the service brakes, ensure they are set before making any changes to the parking brake. Use the adjusting nut to modify the front cable length so that the rear brakes lock when the parking brake lever is pulled; for models from 1971-84, aim for 5-10 notches, for 1986, 11-13 notches, and for 1987-89, 7-12 notches. After making adjustments, apply the parking brake multiple times, then release it to check that the rear wheels rotate freely; if they drag, repeat the adjustment. If the parking brake cable is replaced, prestretch it by applying the brake firmly three or four times before adjusting. For removal and installation, raise and support the front end on jackstands, then remove the adjusting nut, separate the front cable from the equalizer, and take off the jam nut. Next, remove the return spring and boot from the housing, pull the lower housing forward out of the slotted frame bracket, and slide the cable shaft sideways until free. Disengage the upper cable connector from the brake lever by removing the clevis pin and retainer, then take out the upper cable housing retaining clip and pull the upper cable and housing from the slotted bracket on the firewall. Push the upper cable, housing, and dust shield grommet through the firewall into the engine compartment, and finally remove the cable and housing, reinstalling in reverse order. For rear cables, raise and support the rear end on jackstands, disconnect the equalizer from the clevis, and detach the right-hand cable from the left. Remove the rear brake shoes, disengage the cables from the brake shoe levers, and take off the cable housing retainer from the backing plate. Pull the return spring to release the retainer plate from the housing end, loosen the cable housing-to-frame bracket locknut, and remove the forward end of the cable housing from the frame bracket. Remove the cable housing retaining clip bolts, disengage the cable housing-to-frame tension springs, and pull the cable out of the backing plate, with installation following the reverse of removal.
