Mazda Millenia Camshaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install the camshaft on Mazda Millenia?
    A:
Removing the camshaft in a 1.5L engine, it is recommended to firstly disconnect the negative battery cable, and then take out the brackets of the power steering hose on the cylinder head cover. De-label and disconnect the spark plug wires and clips, breather tube and PCV valve. Unscrew and lift off the cylinder head cover, followed by the removal of the accessory drive belts, water pump pulley, Timing Belt covers and timing belt. Take out the distributor, use a wrench to hold the camshaft, and loose the camshaft sprocket mounting bolt to get rid of the sprockets. Unscrew the seal plate, clockwise rotation of the camshafts and steps of loosening the front camshaft cap bolts prior to the removal of the caps. Record the position of the caps that are to be reinstalled, loosen and remove the rest of the camshaft caps and the camshafts themselves, the chain, and the oil seals. To install, install the chain adjuster, lubricate the lobes and journals of the camshaft and install the camshafts making sure the lobes do not sit on the tappets. Apply silicone sealant on the mating surfaces of the front camshaft caps, apply bearing caps in their respective places, and screw the bolts in that order. Apply oil and fit new camshaft seals, the seal plate, sprockets, timing belt and covers. Install the water pump pulley and the accessory drive belts with the appropriate tension. Apply silicone sealant to an additional cylinder head cover gasket and fasten it, sequentially attaching the bolts. Install the power steering hose brackets, reconnect the spark plug wires, breather hose and PCV valve, adjust the valve clearance, ignition timing and idle speed and reconnect the negative battery cable and verify that there are no leaks. In the case of 1.6L and 1.8L SOHC engines, the cylinder head is to be removed, the camshaft retained with a wrench and the sprocket bolt and sprocket removed. Unscrew the bolts of the rocker arm shaft, disassemble the seal of the camshaft, the thrust plate and slowly push the camshaft out. Installation requires lubrication of the camshaft and bearing surfaces, pushing the camshaft back in, placing the thrust plate in, lubricating the rocker arms and then replacing them. Install the camshaft sprocket and tighten the bolts in that order and reassemble the components and cylinder head. In the DOHC 1.6L, 1.8L, and 2.0L engines, disconnection of the battery, removal of spark plugs and hoses and removal of the cylinder head cover are done. Take off timing belt and distributor, and keep the camshaft with a wrench, and take off sprocket bolts. Unscrew the oil seals, camshafts, and camshaft caps. When installing, lubricate camshaft journals and lobes and place silicone sealant around the mating surfaces and replace the caps in their respective locations by tightening them in that order. Sequentially install the camshaft sprockers and other parts. In the case of the 2.ZL engine, disconnect the battery, take the cylinder head cover off as well as the timing belt and distributor and ensure that you do not allow the camshaft to turn when taking off the sprocket bolt. Take off the front and rear housing, loosen the rocker arm shaft bolts and take off the camshaft caps before removing the camshaft. To install it, lubricate the camshaft and install it with the dowel pin facing up, sealant on the cylinder head, and replace the caps. Tighten /secures the arm rockers assembly and fit the front and rear housings with new gaskets. In 1.8L (K8) and 2.5L engines, depress the fuel pressure, remove battery, and empty the cooling system then take off timing belt and parts needed. To get the caps and camshafts out, hold the camshaft to loosen the sprocket bolt, by positioning the camshaft knock pin, loosening the camshaft cap bolts in that order. Apply lubricant to the camshaft and position it with thrust plate, and apply sealant on the facing surfaces. Bolt the camshaft sprockers on and tighten the bolts and re-assemble the cylinder head cover and the other parts. In the case of 2.3L engine, de-pressurize the fuel, unplug battery, and cut-off timing belt covers and belt. Lift the ignition coils, Intake Manifold, and withdraw the cylinder head cover and camshaft sprockets. Make sure that the camshaft knock pins are in place, record the markings on the caps and remove them one at a time. Replace the oil seals, grease the camshaft and screw them in place with the caps in order. Lastly, remove the cylinder cover, distributor, ignition coils, intake manifold and timing belt, re-connect the battery and inspect any leakages. In the case of lash adjusters and cam followers, strip the camshaft and label the adjusters and extract them by a magnet out of their bores, labeling and rearranging them to be installed back. The inspection includes the cleaning of the camshaft, wear inspection, journal diameter and lobe height measurement and checking of the end play.
