The power brake booster unit requires no special maintenance apart from periodic inspection of the vacuum hose and the case. Dismantling the power unit requires special tools and is not ordinarily done by the home mechanic; if a problem develops, a new or factory rebuilt unit should be installed. To remove the unit, first disconnect the vacuum hose from the check valve on the power brake booster and remove the check valve. For V6 models, the windshield wiper arms, wiper motor, and link must be removed to access the booster. From the passenger compartment, remove the cotter pin and clevis pin from the brake pedal assembly, then take out the nuts securing the booster to the firewall. In the engine compartment, lift the booster unit away from the firewall and out of the vehicle. Installation is the reverse of removal with additional steps, including carefully testing the operation of the brakes before placing the vehicle in normal service, checking the pushrod length, and ensuring proper operation after reinstalling the master cylinder before driving in traffic.
