The brake light switch is installed on a bracket at the top of the brake pedal and it is this bracket that turns on the brake lights when the rear of the vehicle when the brake pedal is pressed. To test the switch, see whether the brake lights come on each time the pedal is pushed, and off when it is released, if not it is necessary to check the switch as part of the brake pedal adjustment. Should the lights be unresponsive then the switch might not be getting power, or it has a fault, or as a possibility of the circuit between the switch and the lights. Even though it is improbable, it is possible that all bulbs of the brake lights are burned. Test or voltmeter Check voltages on one side of the switch connector, and, in the absence of voltages, do some troubleshooting to the fuse box. When there is a voltage, test the alternate side with the brake pedal pressed, when there is none replace the switch and when there is, troubleshoot the circuit to the brake light. In order to fit the switch, take out the knee bolster trim panel and the knee bolster, which is no longer required, as well as take out the knee bolster. Disassemble the electrical connector of the brake light switch, either counterclockwise and removing it 2006 onward, or unscrewing the locknut and loosening the locknut 2005 onward. Installation is the opposite of removal, and adapt the brake pedal, in 2005 and earlier, the switch also needs adjusting, with 2006 and later models the clearance being automatically adjusted the first time the electrical connector is reconnected.
