How to replace the knock sensor on Mazda MX-5 Miata?

In the case of the 1999 to 2005 models, the knock sensor should be on the right side of the engine block, just above the oil filter canister. To remove the intake manifold support bracket, first disconnect the cable with the negative battery terminal, then take out the intake manifold support bracket. The second step is to unscrew the sensor and then disconnect the electrical connector to the knock sensor. Installation is in the opposite order of removal and the installation of the knock sensor is tightened to the required torque. In later models (since 2006) the knock sensor is found on the left hand side of the engine block beneath the intake manifold. Begin by unplugging the cable of the negative battery post, and then take the intake manifold out. Next, unscrew the electrical connector of the knock sensor, unscrew the mounting bolt and extract the knock sensor. Like the previous models, installation is the opposite of removal with care being taken to tighten the mounting bolt to the required torque.
