Tighten pitman arm-to-sector shaft nut to 130 ft.lbs and pitman arm-to-center link nut to 43 ft.lbs 1972-86 trucks or 32ft.lbs 1987-89 trucks. When the cotter pin is misaligned, make sure to tighten the nut and not loosen the nut.

  Lift the front part of the car and ensure that it is supported firmly by jack stands. Loose the lock nut by loosening with a puller, and removing the cotter pin, and then breaking the connection between the Pitman arm and the center link. Fold the rubber boot down and incorporate the fork of the puller and tighten the puller bolt, which is on the stud and tap the puller with a hammer until the connection loosens. On the other end of the Pitman arm, Unscrew the large lock nut on the sector shaft until it is on the end of the shaft, and it covers the threads. Because this large lock nut is clamped in with substantial torque it might require a large puller to loosen the Pitman arm off the sector shaft since a small gear puller might not be able to generate sufficient force. Install a proper puller on the Pitman arm, and then strike the end of the puller bolt to loosen the connection, then proceed to tighten and strike until the Pitman arm is loosened. After removal, inspect the Pitman arm to determine its deformation or damage. Fit the Pitman arm to the sector shaft making sure that the serrations fit right in to install it correctly. Tighten the lock nut, 94 to 123 ft-lb (13 to 17 m-kg) and fit the Pitman arm to the center link and tighten the lock nut, 22 to 33 ft-lb (3.0 to 4.5 m-kg) then fit a new cotter pin. Lastly, reduce the vehicle and carry out test drive.
