Mazda Pitman Arm

The Mazda Pitman Arm converts the rotation of the steering wheel into precise linear movement that keeps every Mazda confidently on course and maintains the brand's famously direct road feel. Celebrated for zesty Skyactiv engines, engaging chassis balance, and the flowing Kodo design language, Mazda provides cars that look lively and drive even better while sipping fuel responsibly. Its i-Activsense safety suite monitors traffic and lane position while available i-Activ AWD sends power where traction is scarce, so commuters and explorers alike enjoy assurance without sacrificing fun. Electrification projects and hybrid systems further highlight Mazda's commitment to cleaner performance and innovative engineering that stays true to a spirited character. Mirroring these strengths, the Pitman Arm utilizes strong forged steel to transform the angular motion of the gearbox into a straight push or pull on the steering linkage, which can sweep the front wheels to the left or right with minimal play. This Pitman Arm works in tandem with the idler arm to maintain the assembly at the correct height to provide predictable feedback when making tight turns or cruising on the highway. Its integrated joint reduces wear, extends service life, and helps keep steering crisp throughout the lineup. Replacing a worn unit instantly restores the trademark handling qualities drivers expect from Mazda, reaffirming how a small component supports the brand's big reputation for control and confidence.

Mazda Pitman Arm Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install the pitman arm on Mazda B2000?
    A:
To change and fit the pitman arm, you have to raise and hold the front end using jackstands. Then loosen the cotter pin and nut which hold the center link to the pitman arm, and then use a ball joint separator to detach the center link to the pitman arm. Align the pitman arm and the sector shaft and then remove the nut of the arm-to-sector shaft and remove the pitman arm but this might need a puller. Installation Reinstall the matchmarks taking the reverse order. Tighten pitman arm-to-sector shaft nut to 130 ft.lbs and pitman arm-to-center link nut to 43 ft.lbs 1972-86 trucks or 32ft.lbs 1987-89 trucks. When the cotter pin is misaligned, make sure to tighten the nut and not loosen the nut.
  • Q: How to properly remove and install a Pitman arm on Mazda RX-7?
    A:
Lift the front part of the car and ensure that it is supported firmly by jack stands. Loose the lock nut by loosening with a puller, and removing the cotter pin, and then breaking the connection between the Pitman arm and the center link. Fold the rubber boot down and incorporate the fork of the puller and tighten the puller bolt, which is on the stud and tap the puller with a hammer until the connection loosens. On the other end of the Pitman arm, Unscrew the large lock nut on the sector shaft until it is on the end of the shaft, and it covers the threads. Because this large lock nut is clamped in with substantial torque it might require a large puller to loosen the Pitman arm off the sector shaft since a small gear puller might not be able to generate sufficient force. Install a proper puller on the Pitman arm, and then strike the end of the puller bolt to loosen the connection, then proceed to tighten and strike until the Pitman arm is loosened. After removal, inspect the Pitman arm to determine its deformation or damage. Fit the Pitman arm to the sector shaft making sure that the serrations fit right in to install it correctly. Tighten the lock nut, 94 to 123 ft-lb (13 to 17 m-kg) and fit the Pitman arm to the center link and tighten the lock nut, 22 to 33 ft-lb (3.0 to 4.5 m-kg) then fit a new cotter pin. Lastly, reduce the vehicle and carry out test drive.
