Mazda Protege Shift Cable Parts and Q&A

  • Q:
How Is the Shift Cable Removed, Installed, and Adjusted on Mazda Protege?
    A:
In order to remove and install the shift cable, you must first remove the battery, battery tray and air cleaner assembly. This will give you access to the top of the transaxle where the shift cable connects. Lift the shift cable end off the bracket by detaching the retainer clip and removing the cable from the shift lever and disconnecting the shift cable end from the transaxle. Subsequently, unscrew both the side covers for the consoles and control box. Then unscrew the indicator panel screws to lift the indicator panel. Remove the nut that secures the shift cable to the shift lever. Then pull the 'eye' of the cable from the lever. Note that the shift cable is on the left, and the shift lock cable is on the right. Withdraw the bolts fastening the cable to the vehicle and remove the cable from the shifter mechanism. If fitted, unbolt without disconnecting the electrical connector the airbag control unit from floor pan. Unbolt the Powertrain Control Module and position both to one side. Trace the cable up to the firewall, where you will need to take out the two nuts holding the grommet plate to disconnect it and pull the cable into the vehicle. To install, simply reverse the removal procedure and adjust the shift cable. To make the adjustment, place the shift lever in Park. Loosen the two cable mounting bolts located in front of the shift assembly. Hold the shift lever forward against the stop. Tighten the mounting bolts securely. Test transaxle operation in each shift lever position. Starter should operate only in the Park and Neutral positions. For models from 1997 onward, you need to place the shift lever in the Park position. After that, you need to loosen the nut that secures the shift cable to the shift arm on the transaxle. Push the shift cable back toward the cable housing until it stops. Finally, tighten the nut.
